The best 12×24 pool cover depends on the pool’s shape and what you need it to do. For a rectangular in-ground pool during swimming season, start with the Blue Wave NS405 solar blanket. For an oval above-ground pool, the Blue Wave NS492 is the corresponding solar option. For winter closing, look at the Arctic Armor WC952 for rectangular in-ground pools or WC716-4 for oval above-ground pools.
None of these four covers is a child-safety barrier. Solar blankets and ordinary winter covers must not be relied on to support a person or prevent drowning. Keep children and pets away from covered pools. Pool Safely recommends active adult supervision and layers of protection, including a fence around the pool with a self-closing, self-latching gate. See its pool safety guidance.

Solar-cover measurements describe a blanket intended to float on the water. Winter-cover listings generally start with the pool size and add material for the sides or deck. Check the selected shape and model number before ordering: a 12×24 oval and a 12×24 rectangle are different fits.
1. Blue Wave NS405: best for a rectangular in-ground pool during swimming season
The NS405 is the blue, 12-mil, 12 × 24 ft rectangular blanket in Blue Wave’s solar-cover range. It is a sensible choice when your main goals are reducing evaporation and retaining warmth between swims. It floats on the water rather than fastening to deck anchors.
Choose it if: your pool has a rectangular 12 × 24 ft water surface and you want a seasonal blanket you can remove completely for swimming. Skip it if: you need an off-season winter cover or a safety system.
The maker’s instructions allow trimming to the pool’s contours, but the blanket cannot cover a step extension that falls outside its supplied dimensions. Measure the full water outline before buying. Check that you have room to remove and store the whole blanket; a compatible reel is a separate purchase.

2. Blue Wave NS492: best solar option for an oval above-ground pool
The NS492 is a clear, 12-mil blanket shaped for a 12 × 24 ft oval above-ground pool. Choose this shape when your pool has curved ends. The matching rectangle’s corners would otherwise need attention, while an oval blanket would leave a rectangular pool’s corners uncovered.
Choose it if: your above-ground pool has a matching oval water surface and you want evaporation control during the swimming season. Skip it if: you need a fitted debris cover that attaches around a rectangular frame, or a winter cover with extra material over the rails.
Clear material and nominal thickness do not establish a guaranteed temperature increase or service life. Sun exposure, weather, water temperature and how consistently you use the blanket all affect the result. Blue Wave’s solar-blanket instructions and limited warranty apply to care and storage as well as coverage.
3. Arctic Armor WC952: best winter option for a rectangular in-ground pool
This is the 12 × 24 ft rectangular variant of the Arctic Armor 15-Year In-Ground Pool Winter Cover sold through Blue Wave Products. The current manufacturer model is WC952. It is a solid polyethylene winter cover with a black underside, reinforced seams and loops for water tubes.
The manufacturer specifies a 5 ft total overlap allowance. That adds five feet to the pool’s width and length, giving a nominal 17 × 29 ft cover for a 12 × 24 ft pool. It does not mean five extra feet on every side. The allowance must also accommodate the pool’s closing water level and contours.
Choose it if: you are closing a matching rectangular in-ground pool and want a solid cover to keep out debris. Plan for: separately purchased water tubes and winter maintenance. The “15-Year” name refers to a limited warranty, not a promise that the cover will last 15 seasons.

4. Arctic Armor WC716-4: best winter option for an oval above-ground pool
The WC716-4 is the 12 × 24 ft oval variant of Arctic Armor’s 8-Year Above Ground Pool Winter Cover. Its solid polyethylene material and black underside are intended for off-season coverage. A cable and winch are included.
The manufacturer’s 4 ft total overlap allowance corresponds to nominal cover dimensions of 16 × 28 ft for this pool size. The extra material accommodates the top rails and the cover’s path down to the water; it is not an invitation to stretch the cover tight across the pool. Have the seller confirm fit if your rails are unusually wide or your closing water level requires more slack.
Choose it if: you have a compatible oval above-ground pool and need an ordinary winter cover. Skip it if: your pool is rectangular or its manufacturer requires a dedicated frame-specific cover. Its “8-Year” name is a limited-warranty description, not an expected replacement interval.

How to choose the right 12×24 cover
Match the job before comparing thickness
A solar blanket is for the swimming season. A winter cover is for closing the pool. A safety cover is a separate product category with specific performance, anchoring and fit requirements. A thicker solar blanket or a winter cover advertised as “heavy duty” does not become a safety cover.
Measure the water outline and identify the pool
Record the pool’s actual length, width and shape, including steps, rounded corners and any raised features. For above-ground pools, also record the manufacturer and model. A cover meant for an oval steel-wall pool is not automatically suitable for a rectangular Bestway or Intex frame pool just because both are advertised as 12×24.
For winter covers, distinguish pool size from cover size. Do not add the advertised overlap twice when selecting a variant. Check the manufacturer’s winter-cover fit and care instructions for your cover type and closing water level.
If child safety is the goal, arrange a professional fit assessment
Ask a qualified pool-cover professional to assess the complete pool outline, deck material, available space, obstacles and the exact cover configuration. Require the manufacturer’s current safety-standard documentation for that configuration before ordering. Existing anchors and a generic “12×24” label are not enough to establish compatibility.
Do not cut, improvise anchors for, or modify a safety cover to make the wrong size fit. Continue supervision, fencing and other required safeguards even when a safety cover is installed. No cover guarantees that drowning cannot occur.
Questions before buying
Can I swim with part of a solar cover still on the pool?
No. Remove the entire blanket before anyone enters the water. The CPSC warns that swimmers can become trapped beneath a partially removed solar cover.
Can a solar blanket stay on all winter?
Not these Blue Wave blankets. Their instructions say to remove them when the swimming season ends because they are not winter covers. Follow the care instructions for cleaning, drying and shaded storage when the blanket is off the pool.
Does a longer warranty mean a better cover?
It does not establish real-world lifespan. Compare what defects are covered, the full-coverage period, later prorated charges and care exclusions. Correct fit and the ability to handle and maintain the cover matter more than choosing by the largest year count alone.
