The best filter for most 6-, 8- and 10-cup Chemex owners is the original Chemex Bonded paper filter. Start with FS-100 pre-folded white squares for straightforward setup and easy removal. A 3-cup Chemex or Funnex needs the smaller FP-2 half-moon family instead. If avoiding disposable paper matters more than reproducing the usual paper-filtered cup, consider an Able Kone or a correctly sized CoffeeSock.
The important decisions are brewer fit, the style of coffee you enjoy and how much cleaning you want to do. A generic cone filter, another pour-over brewer or a shower filter does not answer the same need.

1. Chemex Bonded FS-100: the easiest starting point
The white FS-100 comes as 100 pre-folded square paper filters. Chemex lists it for its larger coffeemakers, excluding the three 3-cup series and Funnex. We recommend it as the default because you can follow the brewer’s own filter instructions without choosing a third-party cone shape or changing filtration material. Check the manufacturer’s fit list and product details.
The square corners give you something to lift when removing the used filter. That is a handling preference rather than a reason to promise better extraction. Once the grounds have cooled enough to handle, cleanup is simpler than emptying and washing a permanent filter. The trade-off is ongoing paper purchases.
Choose it if: you want the familiar Chemex paper-filtered approach and minimal filter maintenance. Skip it if: you own the narrow 3-cup brewer or prefer to wash and reuse your filter.

What about natural squares and circles?
FSU-100 natural squares are another original-paper option for the larger brewers. Chemex says its white and brown papers function the same way; the white paper receives oxygen cleansing, while the natural paper retains its brown color. We would choose by preferred handling, appearance and current cost rather than claim that brown paper makes healthier or automatically better-tasting coffee.
If you dislike protruding corners, FC-100 pre-folded circles sit more flush at the top. Chemex’s compatibility exclusions are the same as for the large squares. There is no need to buy several shapes before learning your normal brewing routine.
2. Chemex Bonded FP-2: for 3-cup Chemex and Funnex
The smaller brewer needs its own filter. The FP-2 unfolded half-moon is specified for the 3-cup Classic CM-1C, Handblown CM-1, Glass Handle CM-1GH and Funnex CM-FNX. It also comes in a 100-filter pack. Check the model you own instead of using the number of mugs you usually pour as a sizing guide.
Its extra step is folding: the manufacturer provides directions and a demonstration on the product page. Keep those instructions handy for the first few brews rather than improvising a fold that blocks the spout. The related natural half-moon is FP-2N.
Choose it if: you want original paper filtration in one of these small models. Skip it if: you need a filter for a larger carafe. A smaller filter is not the right way to make a smaller batch in a larger brewer.
3. Able Kone: a reusable metal alternative
Able’s Kone is a stainless-steel reusable filter designed for 6-, 8- and 10-cup Chemex coffeemakers. The published dimensions are 5 1/8 inches across and 4 inches high. Able also sells other filter shapes, so make sure the selected item is the full-size Kone rather than Kone Mini or a filter intended for a different brewer.
Able describes the resulting coffee as fuller-bodied, with oils that paper would normally retain. That makes it a useful direction for someone who wants to change the cup as well as reduce paper use. It should not be sold as an exact taste replacement for bonded paper. Our recommendation follows the filtration design and the maker’s description, not a side-by-side tasting.
Choose it if: you want a permanent filter and are comfortable with a different brew profile. Skip it if: paper-filter clarity or throwing away the grounds with the filter is the main attraction. Able calls for rinsing and occasional scrubbing; check that this fits your daily routine.
4. CoffeeSock Chemex Style: reusable cotton in multiple sizes
CoffeeSock’s Chemex Style filters are sold in two-packs, with separate options for the 3-cup brewer, 6–13-cup brewers and Funnex. That size selector is essential: “Chemex Style” by itself does not establish which one you are buying.
The maker describes its cotton as retaining some oils while allowing others through. Consider it a separate cloth-filter approach rather than a promise to match either paper or metal. Its listed care routine is to rinse and hang it to dry after each use. A second filter is useful while the first dries, provided both receive proper care.
Choose it if: you prefer a washable cloth option and have room to dry it. Skip it if: you tend to leave used grounds sitting in the brewer or want the least maintenance. We do not assign a guaranteed service life or savings figure because replacement frequency and care vary.
How to avoid the common buying mistakes
- Read the brewer model first. Chemex uses 5-ounce cups, so its size name does not mean the same thing as a large drinking mug. The small-brewer filter distinction matters more than how many people you are serving.
- Compare the delivered pack cost. Check filter count, number of boxes and shipping. A low listing price for one box may cost more per filter than another pack. Reusable options add a cleaning commitment that the price alone cannot show.
- Do not assume every cone fits. Check the filter manufacturer’s explicit compatibility. Hario, Melitta and other brewer-specific shapes should not be treated as interchangeable just because they look conical.
- Decide what you want to change. If you already like your coffee, changing only paper shape or color is a smaller adjustment than switching to metal or cloth.
Using paper filters without blocking the flow
For Chemex’s original paper filters, open the cone with three layers on the spout side. The official filter instructions explain that this reinforces the paper over the air channel and helps prevent a vacuum seal. Start with the recommended medium-coarse grind rather than assuming every slow brew means the paper is defective.
Chemex says pre-wetting is optional; it can rinse loose fibers and warm the carafe. Empty that rinse water before brewing. For detailed troubleshooting, use the manufacturer’s FAQ and change one variable at a time. Follow the reusable filter maker’s directions when using a Kone or CoffeeSock instead.
The bottom line
Buy FS-100 for an uncomplicated original-paper setup in a compatible larger Chemex, or FP-2 for a 3-cup model or Funnex. Choose Able Kone when you actively want a reusable metal filter and a fuller-bodied direction; choose CoffeeSock when you prefer cloth and can commit to rinsing and drying. Fit comes first, then the daily routine you will actually keep.
