Outdoor Couch Cushions: Replacement Sizes, Sets and Care

Written by Alex Rowe

Measure for outdoor couch cushions, compare a deep-seat sofa set with a bench-style cushion, and check fabric, filling, cleaning and storage before buying.

The right outdoor couch cushions are the ones that fit your frame, support the way you sit and can be cared for in your climate. Begin with measurements and the number of separate seat and back pieces. A six-piece sofa set, a single bench cushion and a pack of empty covers solve different problems.

This guide compares two clearly identified replacement options and explains how to check fit. The selection is based on documented construction and dimensions, with no claimed comfort testing, weathering trials or universal “best” ranking.

Measure the couch before choosing cushions

Remove the old cushions and measure the supporting frame. Record the usable width between the arms, the seat depth and the height available for back cushions. Then compare these measurements with the old cushions while they lie flat and are not being compressed by someone sitting on them.

For a three-seat sofa, measure each seat bay as well as the total interior width. Three nominal 24-inch seats suggest a 72-inch arrangement, but piping, rounded edges, frame dividers and manufacturing tolerances can change how a set fits. Do not assume every sofa described as “three seat” takes the same cushions.

  • Seat pieces: note width, depth and thickness separately.
  • Back pieces: check width and height, plus whether they sit on top of the seats or behind them.
  • Shape: record square versus rounded corners and any tapered sides.
  • Attachment: inspect the frame for ties, straps or other original retention features.
  • Quantity: count cushions rather than relying on a “piece” total that may include throw pillows.

Replacement options for two common couch layouts

Creative Living 24-by-24-inch Navy six-piece set: for a matching deep-seat sofa

This selected Creative Living listing is the Navy six-piece replacement set, pictured with three seat cushions and three backs. The seat specification is 24 by 24 inches with a nominal 5-inch thickness. The listing describes polyester covers and foam seat cores wrapped in polyester fiber.

Consider it when your sofa already uses three similarly sized deep seats. Check the back-cushion measurements with the seller as well: the 24-by-24-inch seat dimension does not establish back height. The current listing’s structured quantity fields are inconsistent, so confirm the box contents before ordering a full sofa refresh.

The listed care instruction is hand washing. Zippered, reversible covers make access easier, but a zipper does not by itself mean machine washing is approved. The product is described as water repellent and UV resistant; neither description promises waterproof filling or permanent color retention. A couch frame is not included.

Classic Accessories Montlake 42-by-18-by-3-inch cushion: for a shallow bench-style loveseat

This is the complete cushion, including foam and a slipcover, in Heather Indigo. The manufacturer’s selected variant identifies model 62-014-INDIGO-EC and dimensions of 42 inches wide, 18 inches deep and 3 inches thick. It is a single continuous seat cushion, not a full seat-and-back set.

It is relevant for a matching shallow loveseat, settee or bench-style couch. It will leave a substantial depth gap on a frame intended for 24-inch-deep seats. Montlake’s replaceable covers can be useful when a cover wears before the filling; be careful not to accidentally order the separately sold cover when you need the whole cushion.

Follow the care label supplied with the actual cushion. Do not assume an instruction for another Montlake size, a replacement cover or a different fabric applies to this complete cushion.

Fabric and filling need separate attention

Check what the seller means by “outdoor.” A fabric may resist light rain while water still enters through seams or accumulates in the filling. For an exposed patio, ask about drainage, drying and where the cushions should be stored during prolonged bad weather. A covered porch and an uncovered poolside sofa can place very different demands on the same material.

For the seat, evaluate both thickness and construction. A thick-looking product photo does not tell you how much the filling compresses under your weight. A foam core and loose-fiber back cushion also serve different support roles. If the existing frame is comfortable but the covers are damaged, replacing covers may be enough; if the filling has collapsed, new covers will not restore the original support.

Cleaning and storage without damaging the set

Start with the cushion maker’s instructions, especially for removable covers. Sunbrella’s upholstery care guide specifically advises checking with the furniture manufacturer before removing some casings and allowing fabric to air-dry. That guidance is a useful reminder about construction, but these two featured products are not being represented as Sunbrella cushions.

Brush off loose debris, attend to spills promptly and use only a cleaning method approved for the actual fabric. Do not transfer a bleach recipe from one brand’s material to an unidentified polyester cover. Allow covers and filling to dry fully before putting cushions into closed storage; a dry surface does not necessarily mean the center is dry.

Common questions

Can one long cushion replace three individual seats?

Sometimes, if the frame supports it and the dimensions work. Check whether the frame has dividers, a curved front or gaps that the original individual cushions accommodated. A long cushion also changes how the seams align with the back cushions.

Are indoor throw pillows suitable replacements?

They should not be treated as load-bearing outdoor seat cushions. Decorative pillows may add back support, but the seat still needs filling, dimensions and materials appropriate for that frame and setting.

Can I leave outdoor cushions out all year?

Use the specific product’s instructions and your local conditions. “Water repellent” is not a blanket all-season storage instruction. Plan for sheltered, dry storage when the cushions are not in use for extended periods.
