Compare mechanical and hydraulic excavator thumbs, verify machine and bucket geometry, and plan an approved weld-on installation before buying.

A weld-on thumb for a mini excavator must match the machine, stick, bucket and coupler as a complete system. Start with a thumb approved for that exact configuration. An advertised length such as 18 or 32 inches is useful for screening products, but it does not establish fit, operating capacity or permission to weld to the excavator.

For occasional material handling, a mechanical thumb may be sufficient. For frequent changes in grip position, a hydraulic thumb offers more control from the cab, provided the excavator has the correct hydraulic installation. The buying decision should include professional installation and a clearance check, not just the attachment price.

Choose the mounting method and thumb type separately

“Weld-on” describes how the mounting structure attaches to the machine. “Mechanical” or “hydraulic” describes how the thumb moves. A weld-on thumb can have either type of actuation. Likewise, bolts that join a thumb to its welded mounting plate do not necessarily make the whole attachment a no-weld installation.

Type How it works What to resolve before ordering
Mechanical or stiff-arm thumb A support holds the thumb in an approved position; the bucket moves toward it. Working positions, stowed position, safe adjustment procedure and compatibility with each bucket.
Hydraulic weld-on thumb A hydraulic cylinder changes the thumb position. Approved cylinder, circuit, pressure control, hoses, fittings and installation instructions for the exact machine.
Machine-specific pin-on or mounting-kit thumb Uses the mounting arrangement specified for that excavator and attachment combination. Exact part number, serial-number applicability, bucket/coupler configuration and whether any welding is still required.

Ask the dealer to identify the mounting surface correctly. Many retail listings use “boom” loosely, while the thumb mounting area is commonly on the stick or dipper arm near the bucket. A sales description is not a structural installation drawing.

The fit information your supplier needs

Prepare this information before comparing quotations. Have a qualified installer obtain any measurements that require moving, supporting or accessing the machine.

  • Machine identity: manufacturer, exact model, serial number, operating configuration and standard or long stick. Include any telescopic/extendable arrangement.
  • Bucket identity: manufacturer and part number, width, tooth arrangement and the supplier’s required pivot-to-tip or bucket-radius measurement. Do not substitute the bucket’s overall shipping length.
  • Coupler: make and model, pin-on versus quick coupler, and any tilt or rotation attachment. A coupler changes the relationship between the bucket and stick.
  • Mounting area: available flat length and width, existing brackets and the arm’s construction. The machine manufacturer must approve the proposed mounting method.
  • Thumb geometry: pivot location, tine length and spacing, support or cylinder travel, working positions and folded envelope.
  • Interference: clearance from the bucket, teeth, coupler, linkage, cylinder, hoses and the rest of the machine throughout the permitted operating range.
  • Operating limits: the approved attachment weight and the machine’s applicable load information with the proposed bucket, coupler and thumb installed.

Request written confirmation for the complete combination. If you use both a digging bucket and a wider grading bucket, tell the supplier about both. A thumb that works with one attachment may interfere with another or contact it in the wrong place.

Paladin’s CP stiff-arm thumb manual specifically treats the thumb as part of a particular machine-and-attachment combination. Its installation guidance calls for checking bucket and thumb radii and fit through the rotating range. That is why a tonnage label alone cannot settle compatibility.

Documented options to discuss with your installer

These are specification examples for building a shortlist, not interchangeable recommendations. None establishes compatibility with an unidentified mini excavator.

Option Verified information Buying implication
VEVOR 18-inch mechanical thumb, SKU FCMZ18INCBH12MM01V0 The maker lists an 18-inch tooth plate, 6-inch width, 1/2-inch tooth-plate thickness, 19-inch weld plate and 54-pound weight. Check that both the mounting plate and operating geometry suit the machine. The 18-inch label does not describe the full mounting envelope.
Titan Attachments 32-inch Extreme thumb, SKU 122994 The maker lists 32.5-inch tines, 6.5-inch overall width, 19.25-inch depth and 125-pound product weight. This is a substantially larger assembly. Do not select it merely because more reach sounds useful on a small excavator.
Paladin CP dealer-specified thumb Separate manufacturer manuals cover stiff-arm and weld-on hydraulic versions. Ask the dealer for the precise assembly, mounting drawing and hydraulic kit, where applicable, for your machine and attachments.

The VEVOR product page describes both welding and a removable, bolted thumb assembly. Treat it as a weld-on mounting proposition until the supplied manual and installer confirm otherwise. Do not assume an older Mophorn listing is the same current kit solely because its dimensions look similar.

The Titan 122994 page warns that a mismatched thumb can damage equipment. Its current 32-inch model also must not be substituted silently for an older 36-inch listing. Confirm the actual SKU, dimensions and included hardware on the quotation.

Hydraulic compatibility needs its own approval

An auxiliary connection on the excavator does not, by itself, prove that a hydraulic thumb kit is compatible. Ask the installer to confirm the required hydraulic function, cylinder and circuit specifications, pressure protection, controls, connection sizes and hose routing. The approved arrangement must avoid trapping, stretching or rubbing hoses during machine movement.

Paladin’s weld-on hydraulic thumb manual directs installers to the hydraulic-kit instructions for the specific make and model and requires the bucket to overpower the thumb. Its pressure guidance belongs to that equipment; it is not a universal setting for other thumbs or excavators.

A mechanical thumb avoids a thumb cylinder and associated plumbing, but it still imposes forces on the stick and bucket. Simpler actuation does not remove the need for structural approval, alignment or operating limits.

Welding and commissioning belong in the installation quote

Before buying a weld-on kit, obtain the excavator manufacturer’s approval for the proposed modification. Have a qualified equipment installer and welder work from the current machine and attachment documentation. If the mounting arrangement is outside an approved design, get qualified engineering review before proceeding.

The quote should identify who is responsible for the mounting design, welding procedure, protection of nearby components, inspection and final commissioning. Paladin’s manuals include specific weld-location and inspection requirements, illustrating why generic advice to “weld it anywhere it fits” is inadequate. This guide does not substitute a weld pattern, filler selection or load test for those instructions.

Before the machine returns to work, have the installer document clearance throughout the permitted bucket and thumb movement, secure stowage, pin retention and any required hydraulic checks. Include all approved buckets and couplers in that review. Keep the resulting instructions with the machine.

Compare the whole package

  • Is the quoted item a complete thumb assembly, a mounting plate or a hydraulic conversion component?
  • Which pins, retaining hardware, bushings, support arm and stowage parts are included?
  • For a hydraulic model, are the cylinder, hoses, couplers, valves and machine-specific plumbing included or separate?
  • Are installation, inspection, transport and any approved hydraulic work included?
  • Can the supplier provide replacement wear parts and current documentation?
  • Will the supplier accept a return if fit is rejected before installation, and what changes once welding or assembly starts?

Ask for the parts list and installation documents before committing to a nonreturnable or already-modified attachment. A low kit price can be misleading when the correct installation requires substantial additional work.

Common questions

Will a “universal” weld-on thumb fit any mini excavator?

No. Treat “universal” as a description of a broadly adaptable product, not proof of fit. Machine approval, mounting geometry, bucket/coupler clearance and operating limits still need verification for the exact installation.

Does thicker steel mean the thumb can lift more?

No standalone capacity follows from plate thickness. The attachment design, welds, machine configuration and manufacturer limits all matter. Do not turn an attachment’s dimensions or shipping weight into a lifting rating.

Can I attach a chain to the thumb?

Do not treat a thumb as a lifting point. Paladin identifies using its thumb with a rope or chain as a lifting device as misuse. Any lifting task needs the machine’s approved lifting equipment and procedures.

What should I buy first?

Start with a written fit and installation proposal for your machine. Choose the simplest approved thumb that performs the work you actually need, with an accessible parts supply and clearly assigned installation responsibility.
