A soft-close drawer adapter can be a useful retrofit when the existing drawer runs smoothly and has room for the extra mechanism. The difficult part is choosing hardware that actually fits. A cabinet-door damper, a replacement drawer slide and a stick-on bumper solve different problems, even when their listings use similar words.
Start by identifying the slide type and measuring the drawer box. For compatible wood or melamine drawers, ROK’s SCD104 adapters are an option worth checking. If the slides are damaged, concealed underneath the drawer, or incompatible with the adapter’s mounting geometry, investigate a matched replacement slide system instead.
Choose the right kind of soft-close hardware
- Drawer retrofit adapter: adds a damping mechanism and matching actuator to an existing drawer installation. The existing slides still support and guide the drawer.
- Soft-close replacement slides: replace the running hardware with a system that incorporates the closing mechanism. Length, clearance, mounting position and load rating all matter.
- Cabinet-door damper: cushions a swinging door. For example, Grass UniSoft SCD103 is specified for existing self-closing cabinet doors. It is not the SCD104 drawer retrofit.
- Adhesive bumper: cushions contact at the end of travel. Do not mistake a bumper for a mechanism that captures and draws a drawer closed.
ROK SCD104 drawer adapters: two verified pack options
The gray and white listings below identify two-adapter packs. Treat them as color and package choices within the same product family, rather than two different levels of performance. Confirm the selected variation at checkout; a manufacturer’s single-unit page and an Amazon multipack are not the same package.
ROK SCD104G, gray, two-pack
ROK SCD104G Soft-Close Drawer Adapters, Gray, 2-Pack

This is a potential starting point for an existing wood or melamine drawer with suitable side-mounted slides. ROK’s gray SCD104G specification states a 1/2-inch side clearance and excludes concealed undermount glides. Its detailed compatibility wording specifies side-mounted epoxy slides. That makes the slide design more important than whether your cabinet is described as face-frame or frameless.
ROK SCD104W, white, two-pack
Choose the white version only after the same fit checks. The SCD104W page specifies a minimum drawer depth of 9 inches and a minimum box height equal to 2-3/16 inches plus the slide height. It lists the adapter as 8-3/8 inches long.
Important compatibility conflict: the white manufacturer’s page and Amazon descriptions mention side-mounted ball-bearing slides, while the manufacturer’s detailed notes say epoxy slides only. Do not assume every ball-bearing slide works. Send ROK the slide model and a clear installation photo before buying for that configuration. A statement that an adapter is “universal” does not resolve conflicting fit instructions.
When replacement slides are the better route
A retrofit is less attractive when the drawer already sticks, tilts or has worn runners. Adding a closer leaves those faults in place. Replacement slides may also be necessary when the drawer has no usable mounting space for the adapter and actuator.
The Accuride 3832EC specification sheet illustrates why replacement hardware requires its own measurements. It describes side-mount Easy-Close slides with an up-to-100-pound rating per pair, subject to the stated test conditions. Its side-space requirement is 0.50 inch with a +0.031/-0.0-inch tolerance per side; it recommends a drawer 1-1/16 inches narrower than the opening for optimal operation.
Those figures belong to that slide system, not to every soft-close product. Check the exact length, drawer-width restrictions, mounting hardware and any face-frame brackets before ordering. An “18-inch slide” label alone does not establish that it fits your cabinet.
Measure these five things before ordering
- Slide type and position. Remove the empty drawer according to its hardware instructions. Photograph the runner on the cabinet and the member on the drawer. Identify epoxy/roller, ball-bearing, undermount or another design.
- Clearance on each side. Measure the actual working gap between drawer and cabinet or face frame. Do not substitute the decorative gap around the drawer front. Check both sides and look for narrowing toward the back.
- Drawer box height. Measure the box rather than its taller front panel. For the SCD104 requirement, add the slide’s height to 2-3/16 inches; do not treat 2-3/16 inches as the entire minimum.
- Depth and clear mounting space. Compare the specified minimum depth with the box and cabinet interior. Look for braces, rear brackets, screw heads or other obstructions along the proposed mechanism’s path.
- Mounting material. Check that the proposed screw locations land in sound material. Confirm that screw length will not break through a thin drawer side or collide with another component.
Write the measurements next to the product drawing. If a dimension is missing or borderline, obtain a fit answer before drilling. Buying one small pack for a representative drawer is a more cautious approach than ordering enough for the entire kitchen immediately.
Drawer weight and adapter quantity
The SCD104 manufacturer’s notes recommend two adapters for heavier drawers or drawers at least 24 inches wide; most other compatible drawers use one. They do not provide a numerical loaded-drawer weight limit in the checked specifications. Do not convert that advice into a made-up pound rating.
The load includes the drawer and its contents. Pots, tools and stacked dishes can make a drawer much heavier than it feels when empty. Stay within the existing slides’ documented capacity, and ask the hardware supplier about damping suitability when the loaded weight is substantial or unknown.
Two adapters do not upgrade the load rating of the runners. Nor does a strong closer compensate for loose fasteners, a sagging drawer bottom or an out-of-square box. Treat structural and alignment problems as repairs to complete first.
Check the package contents, not just the piece count
The SCD104 system uses a longer adapter and a shorter actuator. Amazon’s instructions describe aligning the actuator over the adapter. A listing showing several separate plastic pieces may still contain fewer complete drawer sets than you expect.
ROK’s individual-unit pages list five installation screws: two #7 × 1-inch flat-head screws and three #6 × 1/2-inch pan-head screws. For a multipack, check that complete adapter/actuator sets, the corresponding fasteners and installation instructions are included. Do not assume loose hardware from an old installation is interchangeable.
A two-pack might serve two suitable drawers using one adapter each, or one drawer requiring two. Count complete mechanisms against the manufacturer’s quantity guidance before comparing pack value. Replacement slides have different packaging: verify whether the listing contains a pair, one slide, or multiple pairs, and whether brackets are separate.
A sensible installation and checking sequence
Empty the drawer and verify that it opens and closes normally before adding anything. Tighten or repair existing hardware as appropriate. Read the instructions supplied with the exact adapter revision and lay out all the parts.
Position the mechanism and actuator using those instructions. The mating pieces need to engage along their intended path; simply fitting inside the cabinet is insufficient. Use the prescribed fasteners and drilling method, checking thickness and clearance before making holes.
After installation, move the drawer slowly through its full travel. Look for scraping, missed engagement or parts being pushed sideways. Check closure with the drawer empty, then with its normal contents, remaining within the runners’ load rating. Stop if it binds instead of forcing it through.
Some added opening resistance is expected with the ROK mechanism, according to its product notes. A drawer that suddenly requires excessive force, fails to close fully or repeatedly disengages needs troubleshooting. Do not add more adapters as a substitute for correcting alignment.
Frequently asked questions
Can any drawer be converted to soft close?
No. An adapter must match the slides, material, dimensions and mounting arrangement. Some drawers need replacement runners or more extensive cabinet work. Concealed undermount hardware is specifically excluded from the SCD104 application described here.
Will a cabinet-door damper work on a drawer?
Buy hardware explicitly designed for the drawer application. A door damper’s contact geometry and installation instructions do not establish that it can catch and control a sliding drawer.
Should I choose an adapter or new slides?
Choose an adapter when the existing runners are sound and the fit is confirmed. Choose a matched slide replacement when the running hardware needs repair or the retrofit cannot be verified. The most useful upgrade is the one that fits the drawer you have.
