A constellation light fixture can mean two very different things: a sculptural ceiling light with branching arms or starburst points, or a projector that puts stars on your ceiling. Start with that distinction. A chandelier changes the room’s lighting and becomes part of its architecture; a galaxy projector adds a decorative effect.
For a ceiling fixture, the most useful checks are the exact model number, assembled dimensions, bulb or LED system, dimmer compatibility and installation requirements. Below are four specific designs to compare, followed by a separate option for projected stars.
Which kind of constellation light do you want?
- A Sputnik or starburst chandelier: arms radiate from a center, often ending in exposed bulbs. Choose this for a visible sculptural feature above a table or in a room with enough clearance.
- A branching constellation pendant: connected rods and small light points create a looser, constellation-like shape. Some use integrated LEDs rather than replaceable screw-in bulbs.
- A starburst flush mount: a shallower fixture keeps the same visual idea closer to the ceiling. Check the complete installed projection, including bulbs.
- A star or galaxy projector: a separate device projects an effect onto walls or the ceiling. If that is your goal, skip to the projector section below.
Four decorative fixtures worth comparing
Dimensions below are the manufacturers’ published fixture-body dimensions, not a promise that a light will fit your room. Suspension, bulbs and installation clearances also matter. Match the complete model code before ordering: another finish or size can be a different item.

Kichler Armstrong 43118NBR: adjustable-arm Sputnik chandelier
This eight-light Armstrong is a useful starting point if you want a recognizable Sputnik shape and replaceable bulbs. Its Natural Brass color is a finish over steel, not a claim of solid-brass construction. Kichler lists 120-volt operation, a 100-watt maximum lamp rating, dry-location use, a slope-ceiling kit and a maximum hanging height of 69 inches.
The adjustable arms let the silhouette change, so review the arrangement you actually intend to use. Budget for eight matching bulbs and a suitable dimmer. Kichler specifically directs LED users to the bulb manufacturer’s dimming specifications.
Choose it for: an exposed-bulb, mid-century look. Check first: the assembled drop, bulb shape and whether visible lamps will feel comfortable from your seating positions. See Kichler’s exact 43118NBR specifications.
Kichler Armstrong 43196NBR: compact flush-mount alternative
The three-light Armstrong offers a shallower version of the Sputnik style. Kichler specifies 120 volts, G40 lamps, E26 medium bases, a 100-watt maximum lamp rating and a dry indoor location. It is listed as dimmable, but the bulbs and control still need to be compatible.
Choose it for: a compact ceiling position where a hanging chandelier would occupy too much space. Check first: how far your chosen bulbs extend beyond the fixture and whether their globe size suits its proportions. The listed body height alone does not settle installed clearance.
This is a separate three-light model, not a shortened version of the eight-light chandelier. See Kichler’s exact 43196NBR specifications.
SONNEMAN Aquila 2151.33C-27: integrated-LED constellation design
This exact Aquila configuration pairs an Espresso Black finish with clear acrylic lenses and 2700K integrated LEDs. The current manufacturer sheet lists a 32-to-140-inch hanging-height range, a 10-foot adjustable cord/cable and no sloped-ceiling compatibility. It is marked for dry locations.
Choose it for: small illuminated nodes rather than exposed screw-in bulbs. Check first: the supplied driver and the precise control your installer plans to use. The sheet lists ELV, TRIAC and 0–10V dimming; that is not a reason to assume an existing wall control will work.
The sheet also marks the fixture as not field serviceable. Ask about manufacturer-supported repair and replacement arrangements before committing. Do not substitute specifications from another Aquila size, lens, color temperature or model suffix. Read the current 2151.33C-27 specification sheet and view the Aquila product page.
Allegri Constellation 11635-010-FR001: large crystal starburst
This Chrome-finish pendant combines an iron structure with Clear Firenze crystal accents. It has a substantially larger footprint than the other examples. Allegri lists an overall height of 82 inches, 120-volt operation, a dry-location rating and ETL-CETL certification.
Choose it for: a room planned around a large, decorative crystal centerpiece. Check first: structural support, the complete suspension arrangement, cleaning access and the cost of 30 matching lamps. Its E12 bases differ from the E26 bases in the Armstrong fixtures.
Dimming depends on the selected lamps, according to Allegri. Confirm the allowed lamp wattage from the current fixture label or manual before buying bulbs; an E12 socket does not by itself specify that limit. See Allegri’s exact 11635-010-FR001 specifications.
How to choose the right size and hanging height
Make a simple room sketch before comparing product photographs. Record ceiling height, table or island dimensions, nearby doors and cabinets, and the position of the electrical outlet box. Then check these separately:
- Width and depth: mark the fixture’s footprint with tape on a floor or tabletop. A branching light may look airy while still occupying a large space.
- Body height: this is the decorative fixture itself. It may exclude stems, cable, canopy or bulbs.
- Minimum and maximum installed height: confirm the measurement points and which suspension parts are included. A long wire does not prove that an equally long, approved suspension is supplied.
- Usable clearance: consider people standing up, walking past, opening doors and reaching to clean or change bulbs. Ask the installer to approve the final position.
- Ceiling slope: look for explicit model-specific compatibility. Adjustable arms and adjustable hanging height do not establish slope compatibility.
For the Armstrong eight-light fixture, the manufacturer’s installation sheet requires one 12-inch stem. That matters when checking the shortest achievable installation: do not assume every supplied stem is optional.
Bulbs: match the base, shape, output and color
Start with the fixture label. E26 and E12 are different bases. A decorative globe that fits the socket may still be too large for the available space. Check the permitted bulb type, physical dimensions, voltage and maximum actual wattage, then confirm whether bulbs are included.
Use lumens to compare light output and watts to compare electrical power. A bulb’s “equivalent wattage” is not its actual power draw. The Department of Energy’s light-bulb guidance also explains color temperature and warns that LED replacement lamps can be larger than the incandescent lamps they replace.
For an exposed-bulb fixture, the lamp is part of the design. Compare clear and frosted versions in person when possible, and keep bulb model and color temperature consistent across the arms. For integrated LEDs, select the desired color temperature at the fixture-ordering stage unless the exact model explicitly supports adjustment.
Do not treat socket count as a room-brightness measurement. Actual usefulness depends on the selected lamps or LED system, their distribution, room surfaces and other lighting. A dramatic centerpiece may still need separate task lighting.
Dimming: verify the complete combination
“Dimmable fixture” is only the beginning. With replaceable LED lamps, match the fixture, dimmable bulb model and dimmer. With an integrated-LED pendant, the driver and control method are the key details. ELV, TRIAC and 0–10V are not interchangeable shopping terms.
Use the control manufacturer’s compatibility information, such as Lutron’s model-specific LED compatibility tool, and have the installer check the applicable load limits. If your chosen lamp is not listed, ask its manufacturer for a supported control rather than assuming another bulb from the same brand behaves identically.
Installation and location checks before ordering
Use a qualified electrician for permanently connected ceiling fixtures. Have them review the exact manual, supply voltage, mounting support, ceiling construction, suspension components and control requirements before you buy. Kichler’s Armstrong instructions call for installation consistent with applicable electrical codes; this guide does not replace those instructions.
- Confirm the location rating. The fixture variants above are specified for dry locations. Do not assume bathroom, shower-area or outdoor suitability from a room photograph, retailer keyword or finish color.
- Check support and access. The mounting arrangement must suit the actual fixture, and someone must be able to reach its lamps, lenses or crystal safely later.
- Get an installation quote. Include any approved suspension accessories, dimmer, lamps and necessary mounting work in your total budget.
- Keep the exact paperwork. Save the SKU, manual, invoice and bulb or driver information for maintenance and replacement parts.
If you meant stars projected onto the ceiling
A BlissLights Sky Lite Evolve is an example of the other product category. Its manufacturer offers blue-star, green-star and cloud-only options. The star versions use a laser effect; the cloud-only option is a different choice, not merely another fixture finish.
Compare the desired effect, controls, power connection and placement. BlissLights lists indoor operation, a supplied base and power adapter, and BlissHome app control. It also offers a manual control button. Verify the selected variant rather than relying on a photo showing a different star color or a multi-unit bundle.
A projector is appropriate when you want decorative patterns without replacing a ceiling fitting. Do not rely on the effect for ordinary task lighting. The Evolve manual calls for the supplied cord and adapter and warns against connecting it to a dimmer pack. Follow its placement and laser-safety instructions, avoid looking into the beam, and position it so people cannot accidentally stare into it.
Final buying checklist
Before ordering, confirm the complete model and finish, fixture dimensions, achievable installed height, ceiling compatibility, location rating, bulb or LED specification, compatible dimmer and included parts. Then compare the total cost of the fixture, lamps, accessories and professional installation.
Choose a Sputnik chandelier for visible bulbs and radiating arms, a flush mount for a shallower ceiling feature, an integrated-LED constellation design for small connected light points, or a projector for stars on the walls. Getting that first decision right makes the rest of the purchase much easier.
