The best steam generator for a shower is the one sized for the finished enclosure and matched to its controls, steam head and electrical supply. For a purpose-built home steam shower, our shortlist is the ThermaSol PROIII-240 for its included drain pan and integrated flushing system, the MrSteam MS225R2401 for a smaller enclosure with a choice of controls, and the Kohler Invigoration K-32326-NA for a coordinated Kohler installation.
These are residential steam-shower systems that require professional installation. A cleaning steamer, portable sauna boiler, humidifier or tankless water heater is not a substitute. The comparisons below are based on manufacturer specifications and installation manuals, rather than hands-on performance testing.
Best shower steam generators at a glance
| Model | Best fit | Published sizing basis | What to budget beyond the generator |
|---|---|---|---|
| ThermaSol PROIII-240 | Built-in flushing and a longer permitted generator location | 10 kW; up to 240 cubic feet with a ceiling no higher than 8 feet | Compatible control and finished steam head; professional installation. Drain pan is included. |
| MrSteam MS225R2401 | Smaller rooms and flexible control choices | 7.5 kW; 108–161 adjusted cubic feet; selected version is 240 V, single phase | Compatible control and steam head; drain pan and optional AutoFlush; professional installation |
| Kohler Invigoration K-32326-NA | A Kohler control or digital-shower setup | 9 kW; up to 240 cubic feet before the ceiling-height adjustment | Compatible controller/adapter and steam head; drain pan; professional installation |
Do not compare the room-volume figures as if they use one universal formula. MrSteam applies construction-material and ceiling-height adjustments. ThermaSol and Kohler specify their own size increases for ceilings above 8 feet. Have the installer confirm the complete enclosure before ordering.
1. ThermaSol PROIII-240: best for an integrated flushing system
The PROIII-240 is a good starting point when you want ThermaSol’s SmartSteam temperature control and PowerFlush cleaning in one generator. Its exact specification lists a stainless steel drain pan, a 50-foot control cable, a water connector and a power cord among the supplied equipment. That included pan is a useful difference when comparing a generator-only quote with competitors.
The 10 kW model is rated for rooms up to 240 cubic feet at ceilings of 8 feet or less. ThermaSol says to move up one generator size for every additional foot of ceiling height, up to its 10-foot ceiling limit. It permits the generator to be located up to 50 feet from the shower, in an accessible, dry, ventilated indoor location protected from freezing. Its manual requires 6 inches of clearance around the generator.
- Pros: included drain pan; integrated PowerFlush; compatible ThermaSol control choices including MicroTouch, SignaTouch and ThermaTouch.
- Limits: the generator is not a complete finished shower package. Confirm the chosen control and steam head as separate line items. PowerFlush still needs a maintenance routine; the manual recommends it after 1,000 minutes of use.
The specification lists 208–240 V single-phase input, 46 A maximum and a NEMA 6-50P connection. This is a substantial dedicated electrical installation, even though this model has a cord. Have a licensed electrician confirm supply voltage, circuit protection and the exact unit’s requirements. ThermaSol also requires a licensed plumber for the plumbing.

2. MrSteam MS225R2401: best for a smaller custom enclosure
The MS225R2401 is the 7.5 kW, 240 V, single-phase version of MrSteam’s MS225R. It suits a project that lands within the manufacturer’s 108–161 adjusted-cubic-foot range. Its stainless steel tank, serviceable heating element and choice of compatible controls make it worth considering when the room is modest in size but you want to choose the interface separately.
Adjusted volume is the key qualification. In MrSteam’s sizing table, ceramic or porcelain tile on cement board or a mortar bed adds no material allowance, while natural stone, marble, shale, glass block or concrete adds 50%. Each foot above an 8-foot ceiling adds another 15% to the material-adjusted volume, up to 10 feet. Large glass areas and unusual construction also need review.
- Pros: a clearly defined smaller-room size; compatible controls include TempoTouch, TempoFlex, iSteam, AirTempo and iTempo families; optional AutoFlush can automate draining after use.
- Limits: the generator alone excludes the control and steam head. AutoFlush is optional, not a standard included feature. A room that measures 160 cubic feet can exceed this model’s limit once its materials are considered.
Specify MS225R2401 when requesting this configuration. The 208 V version and the Express Steam version are different selections. The current R-series documentation specifies a 3/4-inch steam outlet and corresponding steam-head connection; do not assume that an older E-series installation or a different brand’s head is a direct swap. The 240 V single-phase specification lists 32 A operating current, which is not a substitute for an electrician’s circuit calculation.
Allow service access: the manual calls for 12 inches at both ends and above the generator, or the service provisions it describes. Its zero clearance from combustible surfaces does not mean the service space can be omitted. The standard control cable is 30 feet; an optional 60-foot cable is available. Have the installer choose the control location and any required remote temperature probe.
Explore MrSteam generators and sizing, then request the MS225R2401 configuration. Use the current MS90R–MS400R specifications and R-series installation manual for the final system design.
3. Kohler Invigoration K-32326-NA: best for a Kohler system
The K-32326-NA is Kohler’s current 9 kW Invigoration model for an enclosure rated up to 240 cubic feet. Its appeal is a clear choice of matching controls and steam heads, plus Power Clean flushing and Constant Steam operation. It is especially useful to compare when your installer is already planning a Kohler shower system.
The generator requires separate controls. One route is the K-5557 control kit with its round steam head. Another is the K-32312 controller plus a K-32310 square or K-32309 linear steam head, each purchased separately. Digital-shower installations use the appropriate Kohler adapter and compatible digital system components; those are not included simply by buying this generator. The drain pan is also sold separately.
- Pros: documented control/head combinations; one-touch Power Clean; a current enclosure design that permits the side opposite the pressure-relief valve to sit against a wall.
- Limits: it needs a dedicated 240 V, 60 A circuit, despite the 45 A product electrical rating. The generator must be within 25 feet of the steam head. Keep at least 6 inches of air space on the other sides and provide the specified service access.
Kohler recommends an 8-foot ceiling and requires moving up one generator size per extra foot, with a maximum 10-foot ceiling in this manual. Its specification promotes fast steam, but also lists a 60–300-second time-to-steam range, so a one-minute result should not be treated as a guarantee for every installation. The manual has additional requirements for installations at 6,000 feet elevation; have the installer resolve these with Kohler.
Keep the model number precise: the older K-5529-NA and this K-32326-NA have different installation documentation. View the Kohler K-32326-NA, its specification and the applicable installation instructions.
How to choose the right steam generator
Start with a finished-room survey. Measure length, width and height, then identify the wall and ceiling materials, glazing and enclosure construction. For example, a 4-by-5-by-8-foot room has a raw volume of 160 cubic feet. Under MrSteam’s published method, applying the 50% natural-stone allowance makes that 240 adjusted cubic feet, beyond the MS225R’s 161-cubic-foot maximum. This example illustrates why buying by floor area or wattage alone can go wrong.
Get a complete installation quote. Include the generator, matching controller, correctly sized steam head, drain pan, any automatic drain accessory, water-quality work, electrical service, plumbing, waterproofing and steam-rated enclosure construction. These products are intended for a fully enclosed steam shower with suitable materials, a ceiling and a door. An ordinary open shower or a curtain does not establish a suitable enclosure.
Plan the steam head before choosing the bench. Placement is model-specific: ThermaSol’s SteamVection instructions specify 24 inches above the floor or tub rim; MrSteam’s round/square AromaSteam instructions specify 6–12 inches above the floor, with exceptions; Kohler’s current generator guide shows 6 inches and refers installers to the selected head’s instructions. These are planning differences, not interchangeable installation directions. The installer must keep the hot outlet and direct steam away from people, seating and sensitive materials.
Keep service and water quality in the budget. A compact cabinet still needs accessible valves, connections and service space. Have the feedwater tested against the chosen manufacturer’s requirements and arrange the specified flushing or draining routine. Automatic cleaning features do not eliminate water-quality requirements or every maintenance task.
Use qualified trades for the complete system. The electrician and plumber must follow the exact manuals and local codes, including circuit protection, steam-line material and routing, pressure relief and drainage. Do not improvise with a blocked outlet, a shut-off valve in the steam line, or a generator placed inside the shower. Read the operating warnings before use: hot steam and the head can burn, and excessive heat exposure can cause overheating. Follow the manufacturer’s medical-clearance advice and leave immediately if you feel unwell.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the ThermaSol PROIII-240 if its room sizing fits and you value the included pan and integrated PowerFlush. Choose the MrSteam MS225R2401 when your installer confirms a smaller adjusted room volume and you want to select controls and drain accessories separately. Choose the Kohler K-32326-NA when the matching Kohler components suit your project and the electrical supply and 25-foot placement limit work. Final sizing and the installed-system quote should decide the purchase.
Frequently asked questions
What size steam generator does my shower need?
Start with the finished enclosure’s length, width and height, then apply the selected manufacturer’s material and ceiling-height rules. A raw cubic-foot measurement alone is not enough for every brand. Have the installer confirm the model before ordering.
Does a steam generator include the controller and steam head?
Do not assume it does. The generator-only selections here need compatible controls and a finished steam head. Check every package’s contents: Kohler’s K-5557 control kit includes a round head, while its K-32312 controller requires a separately selected head.
Can I put the generator inside the shower or install it myself?
These generators belong outside the steam enclosure in an accessible indoor location that meets the manufacturer’s ventilation and temperature requirements. Electrical and plumbing work should be completed by qualified, licensed professionals in accordance with the exact manuals and local codes.
Can a portable sauna steamer or humidifier make a steam shower?
No. Those appliances are designed for different applications and are not substitutes for a residential shower steam generator, its matched controls and steam head, and a properly constructed steam enclosure. Use equipment only for its specified purpose.
Do automatic flushing features make a steam generator maintenance-free?
No. Water quality, drainage and the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule still matter. ThermaSol PowerFlush and Kohler Power Clean have their own operating requirements, while MrSteam AutoFlush is an optional accessory. Ask the installer to explain the required routine and safe cooling time before any manual draining.
