Compare Magnavox MD6924 for straightforward CD and radio use with Sony CFD-S70 for CDs and cassettes, including batteries, disc formats and a Sony serial-number check.

For a straightforward CD-and-radio player, the Magnavox MD6924 is the simpler pick. Choose the Sony CFD-S70 when cassette playback matters too, provided you first check its serial-number notice. These are two compact all-in-one choices for shelf listening and battery-powered use away from an outlet; a Bluetooth speaker alone cannot play your discs.

The comparison below is based on documented formats, controls, power requirements and exact product configurations. We have not performed listening or radio-reception tests, so there is no claimed winner for sound quality, bass or volume. Choose around the media you actually own and the connections you need.

Pick Why choose it Exact version Important limit
Magnavox MD6924 Simple CD and AM/FM listening Black MD6924; standard single-unit listing CD-R/RW listed; MP3 data-CD playback not established

Magnavox MD6924: best for a simple CD-and-radio setup

The MD6924 combines a top-loading CD player with AM/FM radio, a track-number LED display and programmable CD playback. Its listing explicitly names CD-R and CD-RW compatibility. It is the choice to consider when you want to put on an audio CD without also paying attention to cassette controls or app setup.

For home use, the listing includes a mains power accessory; for portable use, it calls for six C-size batteries, not included. Confirm the actual supplied power part and its ratings with the seller. Battery operation does not mean there is a rechargeable pack inside, and we do not have a verified listening-time result for this model.

The 3.5 mm AUX input can take analog audio from a compatible source with the appropriate cable or adapter. An AUX input is not a headphone output. If private headphone listening is essential, do not assume this model provides it from the AUX label. Bluetooth reception and transmission are not features we have established for the MD6924.

Buy it for ordinary audio CDs and appropriately recorded CD-R/RW audio discs. A generic retailer specification mentions MP3, but the product’s detailed feature list does not establish MP3 data-CD decoding. If you keep albums as MP3 files burned onto a disc, choose a player with explicit support or get exact-model confirmation before ordering.

Sony CFD-S70: best when you also play cassettes

The CFD-S70 adds a cassette deck with recording to its CD player and AM/FM radio. Sony explicitly lists audio CDs, CD-R/RW and MP3 CDs, plus shuffle and programmed playback. This makes it the more useful fit of the two for a collection that mixes conventional albums, compatible MP3 discs and tapes. Recording conditions can affect whether a homemade disc plays correctly.

Check the serial number before buying. Sony identifies a CD optical-pickup problem affecting some black CFD-S70 units with serial numbers 1000001 through 1833960. The special warranty extension has ended. A listing’s model name does not establish its serial number or condition: ask the seller for those details, read Sony’s notice, and check the return terms, especially for old or used stock.

Sony documents an included AC cable and operation on six C-size batteries, sold separately. Its US datasheet specifies 120 V, 60 Hz mains power, so check the regional version if shopping across borders. We would use the supplied cable for a regular home spot and budget separately for portable power. No runtime comparison is claimed here.

The Sony provides a stereo-mini AUX input and a separate stereo-mini headphone output. Its documented sources are CD, cassette, radio and auxiliary audio; this recommendation does not include Bluetooth streaming, Bluetooth headphones or USB music playback. If wireless audio is the reason for buying, choose a model whose manual expressly supports your required direction.

What to check before ordering

Separate disc type from file type. CD-R and CD-RW describe recordable media; they do not by themselves promise playback of every MP3, WMA or other file stored on the disc. The Sony explicitly lists MP3 CDs. The Magnavox evidence supports a more conservative audio-CD recommendation. Keep a representative disc ready to check during the seller’s return period.

Bluetooth also has two directions: receiving music from a phone and sending the player’s audio to wireless headphones. A product that advertises one does not necessarily do the other. Neither model here is a documented solution for those wireless requirements. Check the exact manual rather than assuming “portable” means Bluetooth or rechargeable.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the better choice for home use?

Choose the Magnavox for a simple CD/radio setup, or the Sony if cassettes and explicitly supported MP3 CDs matter. The Sony requires the serial-number check described above. There is no measured sound-quality ranking between them.

Do batteries come with these boomboxes?

Both selected models require six C-size cells for battery operation, and those batteries are listed as separate purchases. Their mains accessories are included in the documented standard packages; confirm the seller’s exact contents.

Can both play MP3 CDs?

Sony expressly documents MP3-CD playback, with recording-condition limitations. We have not established that capability for the Magnavox MD6924 from its detailed model features, so do not rely on a generic MP3 specification row.

Can I pair Bluetooth headphones?

No Bluetooth-transmitter capability is established for either pick. Sony documents a wired headphone output; the Magnavox AUX input should not be mistaken for one. Wireless headphones need a player explicitly documented to transmit Bluetooth audio.

Is every Sony CFD-S70 affected by the CD issue?

No. Sony identifies black units in the specific serial range 1000001–1833960 and says units outside that range are not affected by this issue. We cannot determine a seller’s unit serial from the product listing, so check before buying.
