For a metal roof that needs a color refresh, start with Kool Seal Premium Roof Paint: a tintable acrylic paint in a satin finish. If the project calls for a white elastomeric finish coat, compare Kool Seal Premium 10 Year Elastomeric White Roof Coating. Both list metal roofs as an intended substrate, but they have different coverage, preparation and drying instructions.
This shortlist compares two documented options from one manufacturer. It is based on current product pages, product data sheets and safety data sheets; we have not tested adhesion, weather resistance or service life. The best choice depends on the roof’s existing finish and condition, not simply the word “metal” on the label.
Compare the two metal-roof finishes
| Selected product | Metal coverage per coat | Main buying tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Kool Seal Premium Roof Paint, KST053510-20, Extra White Satin, 5-gallon pail | 200 sq. ft. per gallon; two coats | Tintable color finish; four-hour recoat time at 77°F and 50% relative humidity |
| Kool Seal Premium 10 Year Elastomeric, KS0063600-20, White, 4.75-gallon net fill per data sheet | 70–100 sq. ft. per gallon; two coats recommended | White elastomeric finish; at least 24 hours between coats |
These are per-coat rates, not the area a gallon covers through the complete two-coat system. Drying varies with temperature, humidity and film thickness. For KS0063600-20, the product page says “5 Gallon,” while the technical sheet specifies a 4.75-gallon fill; use the net quantity on the actual label when planning material.
1. Kool Seal Premium Roof Paint: for a tintable satin finish
Premium Roof Paint is a 100% acrylic coating offered in Extra White, Deep and Ultra Deep tint bases. The specific pail compared here is KST053510-20, Extra White Satin, five gallons. Its advantage is color choice with a satin finish. Have the retailer confirm the appropriate base for your selected color rather than assuming every tint starts from Extra White.
The data sheet lists metal roofs and concrete roof tiles. On previously painted surfaces, it requires removing peeling or flaking paint and dulling glossy surfaces. It also calls for an adhesion test before application. An unidentified old coating is a reason to confirm the preparation system with the manufacturer before buying.
This is not a skip-the-primer recommendation. The metal preparation instructions require priming all corrosion with Kool Seal Storm Patch Acrylic Rust Primer 34-800. They separately specify that same primer for Kynar and other fluoropolymer finishes. Account for that extra product and preparation when comparing the project.
At 77°F and 50% relative humidity, the sheet lists two hours to touch and four hours to recoat. It calls for two coats at 200 square feet per gallon per coat on metal, equivalent to eight wet mils per coat. Those figures are application targets; they are not evidence that a rusty or incompatible surface can be coated without preparation. See Kool Seal Premium Roof Paint.
2. Kool Seal Premium 10 Year Elastomeric: for a white finish coat
KS0063600 is a white, 100% acrylic elastomeric roof coating. The maker describes it as expanding and contracting with the roof. Choose it when that white finish-coat system fits the project; the tintable satin paint is the clearer starting point when a specific color is the priority. The selected KS0063600-20 pail has a 4.75-gallon fill in its technical sheet.
Its listed substrates include metal and existing asphaltic or elastomeric roof coatings, along with several other approved roof types. It explicitly excludes roof shingles. That list does not establish compatibility with every factory finish or unknown old coating: confirm the actual substrate, old finish and primer requirements with the manufacturer.
Preparation is a significant part of this system. The sheet requires a clean, completely dry surface, correction of ponding water that persists beyond 48 hours, and repairs to cracks, breaks and open seams before coating. Existing rusted areas require Kool Seal Storm Patch Acrylic Rust Primer. Buying the finish coat alone does not complete those repairs.
For metal, the current technical sheet gives 70–100 square feet per gallon per coat and recommends two coats. It requires at least 24 hours between coats, compared with Premium Roof Paint’s four-hour reference under its stated conditions. That longer interval matters when arranging the work around dry weather. See Kool Seal Premium 10 Year Elastomeric White Roof Coating.
Check the roof and weather before choosing
Identify the existing finish before selecting a coating system. For Premium Roof Paint, corrosion and fluoropolymer finishes have specific primer instructions. For the elastomeric coating, rust, open seams and persistent ponding have separate preparation requirements. Share those details with the manufacturer or a qualified roofing contractor so the coating choice follows the roof’s condition.
Both product sheets say not to apply below 50°F or when rain is forecast. Premium Roof Paint calls for four to six hours of drying before rain, heavy dew or temperatures below 50°F; the elastomeric sheet likewise lists four to six hours before rain or heavy dew. Low temperatures and high humidity extend drying. A short clear spell should not be treated as assurance that the entire two-coat job will fit.
Recoat time is not the same as a verified full-cure time. Neither technical sheet reviewed here states a numeric full-cure interval. Check the current label and manufacturer guidance for the complete schedule rather than converting the touch-dry or recoat figure into an all-purpose readiness claim.
Read the roof paint technical sheet and elastomeric technical sheet together with the matching roof paint SDS or elastomeric SDS. The safety sheets require exposure controls and task-appropriate eye, skin and respiratory protection. Removing old paint can also create lead-containing dust; the elastomeric SDS warns about dust from abrading its dried film. Plan preparation and protection before work begins.
Frequently asked questions
Can either coating replace a roof repair?
Do not buy either one on that assumption. The elastomeric instructions require repairs to cracks and open seams, and correction of persistent ponding, before coating. Premium Roof Paint also requires sound preparation and corrosion primer. Resolve the underlying defect and confirm the complete system first.
Does “10 Year” mean a guaranteed ten-year roof life?
No. It refers to the product’s limited warranty. The stated remedy is product replacement or a refund under its conditions; labor is excluded, as are failures caused by improper preparation, structural defects or previously applied products. Premium Roof Paint has its own five-year limited warranty with comparable exclusions. Read the actual terms when comparing the products.
Which option is better for changing the roof color?
Premium Roof Paint is the tintable satin option in this comparison. The KS0063600 elastomeric product reviewed here is white. Confirm the tint base and coating compatibility before ordering your chosen color.
