Choose a Modern Fuel mechanical pencil by model, lead size and weight. Learn how Click and Bolt Action pencils differ, which refills fit, and what the limited warranty covers.

A Modern Fuel mechanical pencil is worth considering if you want a refillable metal writing instrument with replaceable internal parts. The most useful decisions are the pencil family, lead diameter and weight. A titanium pencil and a copper pencil can share a similar shape while feeling quite different in the hand.

Start with the current Click Pencil, confirm the selected mechanism, and read the service terms before ordering. For a secondhand purchase, identify the exact model before buying replacement parts.

Which Modern Fuel pencil are you buying?

The Modern Fuel Click Pencil is the current product name on the maker’s main pencil page. Its FAQ identifies it as version 2.0. The selector lists 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 mm mechanisms, plus smooth or grooved grip areas. Choose the desired combination explicitly: older FAQ wording about a standard 0.7 mm setup should not override your order selection.

The separately documented Bolt Action Mechanical Pencil has its own mechanism and loading instructions. Its manual includes 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 mm sizes. That manual establishes how to service an existing pencil; it does not establish that every version is currently available to buy.

The maker also sells an Adjustable Bolt Action Pen. That is an ink pen, so its refill compatibility is irrelevant to choosing graphite or a pencil mechanism. For an original version 1.0 or an unidentified used pencil, ask Modern Fuel to confirm parts compatibility rather than assuming current Click Pencil accessories fit.

Choose the lead diameter before the finish

  • 0.5 mm: a sensible starting point for small handwriting, close annotation and fine details. Modern Fuel offers a dedicated 0.5 mm mechanism.
  • 0.7 mm: a middle option for everyday notes and sketching. The maker’s 0.7 mm mechanism page positions it for a broader line than its fine-point option.
  • 0.9 mm: consider the 0.9 mm mechanism if you prefer a wider mark or use the pencil for looser sketches and shading.

Changing lead size means changing to the corresponding mechanism. Putting a different diameter into the same mechanism is not a shortcut. Lead hardness is a separate choice: first match the diameter, then choose a grade that suits the paper and the darkness you want. No diameter makes graphite unbreakable; writing pressure and how far the lead extends still matter.

Materials, weight and grip

Modern Fuel’s pencil specifications list these weights for its four established metals:

  • Titanium: 27.5 g
  • Stainless steel: 42 g
  • Bronze: 47 g
  • Copper: 47 g

The stated body dimensions are 145 mm long and 9.5 mm in diameter. These are manufacturer specifications for the listed versions; check separately for an unlisted finish or material variant.

On those figures, titanium is the logical first comparison if low weight matters most. Copper and bronze suit someone who deliberately wants more heft. Weight alone cannot establish comfort, and a grooved surface may suit a different grip preference from a smooth one. Consider the weight of a pencil you already enjoy before choosing.

There is also a separate Zirconium Click Pencil listing. Modern Fuel describes its dark surface as an oxide layer created by heating polished zirconium and lists the same three Click Pencil lead sizes. Check the exact release and configuration rather than assuming it shares the published titanium weight.

Construction and replacement parts

Modern Fuel describes a custom metal mechanism and a cone and body finished together as a matched pair. Its pencil package listing includes a removable clip, selected mechanism, Allen wrench, five erasers and HB replacement lead. Extra mechanism sizes are accessories.

The mechanism specification names brass, chrome-plated brass and stainless-steel components. The replaceable eraser is separate from that metal construction. Avoid reading “all metal” as a promise that the pencil needs no consumables or maintenance.

The Click Pencil accessory collection lists replacement mechanisms, clips, eraser plugs and lead. Modern Fuel also offers a 20-pack of replacement erasers. An eraser plug closes the top with a metal part; you would then use a separate eraser. Check the selected accessory’s compatibility before buying for an older instrument.

How to refill and identify the mechanism

For the Click Pencil, the official instructions say to remove the eraser, or unscrew the eraser plug, add correctly sized graphite, and replace the top. A routine lead refill does not require taking apart the whole pencil.

The manual identifies Click Pencil mechanisms by markings on the cone: no line for 0.5 mm, two lines for 0.7 mm and three lines for 0.9 mm. For a mechanism swap or cleaning, follow its illustrated disassembly sequence and use the supplied Allen wrench. Keep the original cone and body together.

The Bolt Action Pencil uses a different identification scheme: no line means 0.3 mm, one line means 0.5 mm, two lines mean 0.7 mm and three mean 0.9 mm. Its loading procedure involves removing the cone and mechanism while retaining the spring. Follow the Bolt Action Pencil manual, not the Click Pencil procedure.

If graphite stops advancing, confirm the diameter and consult the relevant cleaning instructions before forcing the button or substituting parts. Contact support if the mechanism appears damaged. Copper and bronze naturally develop patina; that is a change in appearance, not automatically a defect.

What the 100-year warranty actually covers

The published limited warranty, effective April 20, 2025, covers defects in workmanship and materials for 100 years from original purchase under normal writing use and specified care. Modern Fuel chooses repair, replacement with an identical or functionally equivalent instrument, or supply of repair parts and instructions.

The exclusions include consumables, cosmetic wear and patina, accidents, misuse, unauthorized modification, loss and theft. It is not an unconditional replacement promise. Approved warranty parts and labor are free, but shipping depends on timing and location. The policy includes authentic secondhand instruments and gifts; contact support with purchaser or order details when available.

Start a claim with a description and photos or video, then follow the troubleshooting or shipping instructions provided. Because older pages use different warranty language, consult this dedicated policy and confirm any unusual situation with Modern Fuel before relying on coverage.

Check returns before adding personalization

The separate returns policy states a normal 14-day return window after delivery and special holiday provisions. It also lists return charges for engraved and personalized Cerakote items. Review the current terms before ordering a name, date or custom finish, especially for a gift.

A practical order checklist is short: correct pencil family, matching lead size, preferred weight, grip style, compatible spare erasers and understood return terms. Choose those deliberately, and the finish becomes the enjoyable final decision.
