Compare iPad A16, Galaxy Tab S10 FE and Surface Pro 12-inch for handwritten notes, digital textbooks and compatible Windows coursework, including accessory costs.

The best tablet for a student depends on the work it must handle. Start with the iPad A16 for iPad apps and reading, the Galaxy Tab S10 FE for handwritten notes with an included S Pen, or the Surface Pro 12-inch 1st Edition when your course needs compatible desktop Windows software. Each is a real tablet computer, with a different accessory budget and software tradeoff.

Before choosing, check your course’s required applications, exam software and textbook platform. Ask whether the exact tablet operating system and processor are supported, including any required plug-ins or USB equipment. A tablet that reads your textbook may still be unsuitable as your only computer for the course.

These recommendations compare documented features and exact retailer configurations. We have not measured battery life, writing latency or application speed. The “best for” labels describe a use case, and no tablet here is a promise of better grades.

iPad A16: best for iPad apps and digital reading

Our selection is the Silver, 128GB, Wi-Fi iPad A16, MD3Y4LL/A, without an AppleCare+ bundle. It suits a student who has checked that their reading, notes and course apps work on iPadOS. Choose it as a companion to an existing laptop if the laptop will still handle specialist assignments.

Apple specifies a 2360 × 1640 display. The marketed 11-inch screen measures 10.86 inches diagonally as a rectangle, with less viewable area because of the rounded corners. That format is worth considering for pages, diagrams and lecture slides; try a sample textbook page at your preferred text size before choosing.

For handwriting, budget for Apple Pencil USB-C or Apple Pencil 1st generation. The 1st-generation Pencil needs the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter to pair and charge. The compatible keyboard is Magic Keyboard Folio; those accessories are separate purchases. Match the full accessory name instead of buying any product called “Apple Pencil” or “Magic Keyboard.”

The selected standard package lists one iPad, a USB-C charge cable and a 20W USB-C power adapter. It does not include the Pencil or keyboard. The USB-C port supports charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, so connector shape alone is not a reason to expect high-speed external-drive transfers.

Its limitation for study is the software decision: iPadOS is the platform you are buying. Check the actual iPad version of each essential app and the functions your assignments need. A familiar desktop app name or a keyboard accessory does not establish that a desktop workflow is supported.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE: best for handwritten notes with an included pen

The selected Blue Galaxy Tab S10 FE, SM-X520NLBNXAR, is a Wi-Fi Android tablet with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. Its 10.9-inch screen and included S Pen make it the most straightforward pen-inclusive option in this comparison. This is the S10 FE, not the larger FE+ or the S10 Lite.

Samsung documents writing in Samsung Notes and saving quick notes through Screen off memo. Those are useful reasons to consider it for lectures and working through problems by hand. Test your preferred note export and backup workflow before making it the only home for a semester’s work.

The included S Pen does not use Bluetooth Low Energy, and Samsung says Bluetooth pairing, charging and Air actions are unavailable with that pen. It still supports writing and drawing. Buy it for those documented pen functions; a feature advertised for a different Galaxy model or S Pen is not automatically included.

The box lists the tablet, S Pen, USB-C data cable, ejection pin and quick-start guide. Samsung sells the wall adapter separately. A keyboard is also an extra, so compare the complete setup against the iPad plus its Pencil and keyboard rather than comparing tablet prices alone.

The Tab S10 FE is an Android choice. Confirm that your textbook app, learning platform and exam tools support it, especially if your course specifies a Windows computer. MicroSD support can be useful for files, but a memory card does not increase the tablet’s 8GB of RAM.

Surface Pro 12-inch 1st Edition: best for compatible Windows coursework

Choose the Platinum Surface Pro 12-inch 1st Edition, EP2-33670, if you need Windows desktop software and its requirements match this machine. The selected configuration has 16GB RAM, 256GB UFS storage and the eight-core Snapdragon X Plus. Microsoft lists Windows 11 Home for this consumer model.

The 12-inch, 3:2 display and built-in kickstand suit a small desk setup with a keyboard. This is the option to investigate for using a supported desktop application alongside documents and browser tabs. Its detachable format can be convenient, but try the keyboard-and-kickstand arrangement if you expect to type frequently on your lap.

The important caveat is Windows on Arm. Microsoft documents native Arm versions of common Microsoft 365 apps, and Windows 11 can emulate x86 and x64 applications. Emulation does not support drivers: check the exact course software, exam tools and peripherals with their suppliers before relying on this as your only computer.

The selected box contains one tablet, a USB-C charging cable and documents, with no wall charger. The dedicated Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard and compatible Slim Pen are sold separately. Preloaded Microsoft 365 apps or a trial also do not establish a permanent Office license; check your school’s entitlement or the license you will need.

This recommendation covers the 1st Edition. Microsoft has announced a 12-inch successor using Snapdragon X2 Plus, with availability starting October 13 in select markets. Compare the exact generation, delivery estimate and complete accessory cost before ordering; an older tablet is most appealing when the whole setup offers a worthwhile saving.

How to choose a tablet for your course

Handwritten notes and diagrams

Start with the Galaxy Tab S10 FE if an included pen is the priority. Compare the iPad after adding a compatible Pencil, or the Surface after adding a Slim Pen if you also need Windows. Try the note-taking app itself: page organization, PDF annotation, export format and backup may matter more to you than a processor label.

Textbooks and reading

Check that your publisher’s exact book is available in a supported app or browser and whether it can be downloaded for offline use. Try diagrams, two-column pages and a search within a sample chapter. Do not assume that buying a tablet includes textbooks or subscriptions.

A single computer for everything

Get the department’s hardware and software requirements before buying. If they require an x86-only driver or a program unsupported on Windows on Arm, the selected Surface is not the solution. A compatible laptop may be the better first purchase, with a tablet added later for reading and notes.

The real study budget

Add the pen, keyboard, protective case, suitable charger, paid apps and required books to your comparison. Match storage, color, condition and package contents on the current offer, then check the seller, returns and delivery date. We have not ranked these choices by a temporary sale price.

Frequently asked questions

Which student tablet includes a pen?

The selected Galaxy Tab S10 FE includes its S Pen. The iPad A16 needs a compatible Apple Pencil bought separately, and the selected Surface needs a separate compatible Slim Pen. None of these selected standard tablet offers includes a keyboard.

Can a tablet replace my laptop for college?

It can if every required application and workflow is supported. The iPad uses iPadOS, the Samsung selection is Android, and the Surface runs Windows on Arm. Check course and exam requirements first; Windows branding alone does not resolve Arm driver limitations.

Is 128GB enough for a student?

Estimate the space your apps, offline books, PDFs, media and projects will need. The iPad and Samsung selections have 128GB; the Surface has 256GB. Those advertised capacities are not a promise that all of the space is free for your files, so leave room for software and updates.

Do these tablets include Microsoft Office?

Do not assume a tablet purchase includes a permanent Microsoft 365 license. The selected Surface lists preloaded apps and a trial. Check what your institution provides and whether that entitlement covers the apps and features you plan to use.
