Best DEF Fluid for Power Stroke: Three Practical Buying Options

Compare BlueDEF, Motorcraft and KleenDEF by verified specification and container size, with the filling and storage checks that matter for your truck.

BlueDEF DEF002 in a 2.5-gallon container is our first comparison for a routine DEF purchase. Motorcraft PM-27-GAL is worth checking when a smaller one-gallon bottle suits the job; KleenDEF KLF002 is another documented 2.5-gallon option. Choose fresh, sealed fluid that meets your truck’s requirements before comparing brand claims.

DEF belongs only in the dedicated diesel exhaust fluid tank. Engine oil, transmission fluid, power-steering fluid and diesel fuel treatments are not substitutes. Do not add them, water or a homemade mixture to DEF. If DEF has gone into the fuel tank, do not start the engine; arrange professional service.

These picks compare documented specifications and container sizes. We have not tested their emissions performance, fuel economy or resistance to deposits against one another. A premium label or larger multipack does not establish a better choice for your particular truck.

Three DEF options at a glance

DEF option Container compared Documented specification Best reason to compare it
BlueDEF DEF002 One 2.5-US-gallon container Maker states API certification and ISO 22241-1 compliance Starting point for a regular container purchase
Motorcraft PM-27-GAL / PM27GAL One-gallon bottle Listed under WSS-M99C130-A in the 2024 Super Duty manual Smaller container and Ford-listed part number
KleenDEF KLF002 2.5-US-gallon container Maker states API certification and ISO 22241-1 compliance Alternative to compare at a local supplier

Container size is a shopping specification, not an instruction to pour the entire contents into your truck. Check the remaining capacity and the filling procedure in your exact model-year owner’s manual.

1. BlueDEF DEF002: first comparison for a 2.5-gallon purchase

BlueDEF DEF002 is the standard BlueDEF product in this comparison, separate from BlueDEF Platinum. Its manufacturer specification sheet identifies a solution of 32.5% high-purity synthetic urea and 67.5% deionized water. The maker documents API certification and ISO 22241-1 compliance.

Compare it when you want a single 2.5-gallon package. Check that the order is for DEF002 and the intended count: a four-pack is a substantially different storage commitment. Before opening it, inspect the seal, date information and condition of the container.

2. Motorcraft PM-27-GAL: smaller bottle with a Ford-listed part number

Ford lists PM27GAL as one gallon of diesel exhaust fluid. In the 2024 Super Duty owner’s manual, the corresponding PM-27-GAL and PM-27-JUG appear under Ford specification WSS-M99C130-A. This makes the gallon bottle a useful comparison when handling or storing a larger jug is inconvenient.

The one-gallon size does not mean one bottle will satisfy every refill warning. Confirm your model, required quantity and dispensing setup before buying. Do not assume a particular nozzle is included unless the seller expressly lists it.

3. KleenDEF KLF002: another documented 2.5-gallon option

KleenDEF KLF002 is a 2.5-gallon product from Old World Industries. Its page specifies 32.5% high-purity synthetic urea and 67.5% deionized water, API certification and ISO 22241-1 compliance. It is a reasonable alternative to compare when you can obtain a fresh, properly stored container conveniently.

The matching concentration and standard do not prove that every production batch or package is identical to BlueDEF. There is no head-to-head evidence here for ranking one above the other on truck performance. Compare container condition, date information, the final checkout cost and how much you can use.

Buy for the truck and the refill you actually need

The 2024 Super Duty manual requires API-certified DEF. Other Power Stroke vehicles and model years need their own manual check. Find the DEF requirement and filler location before ordering; the blue-capped DEF filler is distinct from the diesel fuel filler. Do not pour DEF into an engine-oil opening.

  • Check the certification mark. Use the API DEF mark and API’s consumer guidance and licensee-directory link to check the product identity. A bottle marked for another automotive fluid is not interchangeable.
  • Buy a manageable amount. Choose the container size and order count around your refill need and storage space. A bulk deal is poor value if the fluid sits in unsuitable conditions or outlasts its labeled shelf life.
  • Keep dispensing equipment dedicated to DEF. Use the container instructions and compatible equipment. Do not use an oil funnel or a hose that has carried another fluid. Keep contamination out of the cap and spout.
  • Plan storage before ordering. Follow the product label and date information; keep containers out of direct sun and heat. Ford’s 2024 manual specifies 23–68°F for stored DEF and says not to store a bottle in the vehicle. Do not assume every unopened container lasts two years.
  • Do not modify the fluid. API warns against aftermarket additives. Buy ready-to-use, certified DEF; do not dilute it, make your own or add an anti-gel product.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use diesel fuel additive instead of DEF?

No. DEF is a separate fluid for the exhaust-treatment system. Fuel treatments, engine oil and transmission fluid are not DEF. Use only the fluid specified for the dedicated DEF tank.

Does every Power Stroke use the same amount of DEF?

Do not use a universal quantity or mileage rule. Read the manual for your exact vehicle and follow its level display and refill instructions. A 2.5-gallon package describes what you are buying, not the amount your tank currently needs.

Should I add something if DEF freezes?

Do not add an anti-freeze or anti-gel treatment. The 2024 Super Duty manual describes a DEF preheating system and warns against overfilling. Follow your own vehicle’s cold-weather instructions and keep the fluid unmodified.

Which of these gives the best fuel economy?

This comparison does not establish a fuel-economy winner. Choose the correct specification, an intact container and sensible storage rather than treating an unverified economy claim as a reason to pay more.

What if I put DEF in the diesel fuel tank?

Do not start the engine. Ford warns that DEF in the diesel fuel tank can damage the fuel system and engine. Contact a qualified service provider for the required draining and cleaning; adding more diesel is not a remedy.
