Best Ring Lights for Self-Tapes: Three Kits to Compare

Compare NEEWER and Westcott ring-light kits by controls, stand, power and phone mounting, with practical checks for audition framing and eye reflections.

If you want a ring-light kit for self-tapes, NEEWER’s RL45B is our first comparison for adjusting the light from your mark. Its detachable controller changes brightness and color temperature remotely. Compare the RL-18 for a simpler filter-based kit, or Westcott’s 18-inch kit if included battery power matters.

Before buying, consider the look: Spotlight’s self-tape guidance advises against ring lights because they can create rings in the performer’s eyes. A ring light is not a requirement for a good audition tape. If those reflections are distracting in your framing, consider a different lighting arrangement instead of buying a more expensive ring.

The choices below compare documented kit contents and controls. We have not measured brightness, color accuracy, flicker or performance on camera. Follow the audition’s recording instructions, and judge your own test clip before deciding that a particular light suits the space.

Three kits at a glance

Ring-light kit Color and brightness controls Stand and power in this comparison Best reason to compare it
NEEWER RL45B, Ring Light Kit 2900–7000K electronic adjustment; detachable magnetic controller Reversible floor stand; power adapter and cord Adjusting light while staying in position
NEEWER RL-18, 18-inch kit 0–100% dimming; 3200K and 5600K via orange/white filters Stand listed to 61 inches; plug-in power adapter Straightforward kit when filter changes suit your room
Westcott 18-inch Bi-Color kit, 4450 3200–5600K electronic adjustment; display and dial 6.5-foot stand; AC adapter, two batteries and charger Recording where a nearby outlet is inconvenient

Stand length does not equal the height of the phone lens. Check the whole assembled setup against your seated or standing framing, and allow floor space for the legs. The chosen RL45B package is the Ring Light Kit; its Desk Ring Light Kit has a different stand.

1. NEEWER RL45B: remote lighting adjustments

The NEEWER RL45B Ring Light Kit includes an 18-inch light, reversible stand, magnetic controller, power supply and carry bag. The controller attaches to the light or detaches for remote operation. The documented 2900–7000K range lets you change color temperature without swapping filters.

This floor-stand bundle also lists two flexible phone holders, a camera ball-head adapter, a Bluetooth shutter and a 2.4 GHz USB transmitter. NEEWER documents phone-app control and PC/Mac control through its software. These are useful workflow options if you often record alone; they do not establish better image quality than the other kits.

Measure your phone with its case and confirm the supplied holder’s fit before ordering. The captured kit page does not give a numeric clamp-width range. A Bluetooth shutter also needs to work with your actual phone and recording app; do not assume every app will respond identically.

2. NEEWER RL-18: a filter-based kit

The NEEWER RL-18 kit includes an 18-inch light, a stand listed to 61 inches, a flexible tube, a phone holder, ball-head adapter, plug-in power adapter and ring-light bag. The maker specifies 0–100% dimming. Its listed 3200K and 5600K color settings are achieved with orange and white filters.

The phone holder is specified for widths of 2.6–3.7 inches, or 6.5–9.5 cm. Measure across the phone and case where the clamp will grip, and check that it can hold the orientation your tape needs. The stand’s published 61-inch maximum still needs to be checked against your lens height and framing.

Choose it if physical filter changes fit your workflow. The tradeoff is that changing the light’s color involves the filter set; it is not the same control method as an electronically adjustable bi-color dial. Confirm the exact package contents instead of assuming every RL-18 seller includes the same remote accessories.

3. Westcott 18-inch Bi-Color kit: included battery option

The Westcott 18-inch Bi-Color Ring Light Kit, model 4450 includes a 6.5-foot stand, AC adapter, two NP-F750 batteries, charger, gooseneck arm, swivel mount, mobile-device mount and case. The comparison uses the Type B US power configuration.

Westcott documents adjustable color temperature from 3200K to 5600K, dimming, a display and a control dial. Compare it when the included batteries solve a real placement problem, rather than buying it on an assumed brightness or color-quality advantage.

The maker’s selected page said “Re-stocking soon” when checked, so confirm supply and delivery timing before depending on this kit for an audition. Also confirm the phone mount’s opening and your device’s fit; a general mobile-device mount description is not a verified fit for every large phone case.

Check the recording setup before choosing a kit

  • Start with framing and lens height. Set up the camera position required by the audition. Then check whether the stand and phone holder can place the lens there without an improvised, unstable stack of furniture. A tabletop stand and a floor stand are different purchases.
  • Look at the eyes and glasses. Record a short clip and inspect the reflections. Spotlight’s ring-light warning is a reason to check the result before committing to this type of light.
  • Check exposure and white balance. Spotlight recommends keeping the face properly exposed with detail in the skin, and adjusting camera white balance if the skin tone looks wrong. Use the light and camera controls together instead of assuming maximum brightness is the right setting.
  • Allow separation from the wall. Spotlight suggests about a meter between performer and wall to reduce shadows. Decide whether that spacing and the stand’s footprint fit the room before choosing a large kit.
  • Buy the complete power setup. The RL45B and RL-18 lists here include plug-in supplies; Westcott includes AC and battery options. Check the regional plug and bundle contents, then route cables clear of your recording position.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ring light required for a self-tape?

No. Spotlight advises against the eye reflections ring lights can produce. What matters is a clear recording that meets the audition instructions; compare a ring-light setup only if its look and placement suit the tape.

Does the RL-18 have the same color control as the RL45B?

No. The RL-18’s published two color settings use white and orange filters. The RL45B offers an electronically adjustable 2900–7000K range and a detachable controller.

Will any phone fit these holders?

Do not assume so. NEEWER lists a 6.5–9.5 cm width range for the RL-18 holder. Confirm the exact clamp limits for the other selected kits and measure your phone with its case; check orientation, camera clearance and grip before recording.

Does a taller stand guarantee a full-body tape?

No. Full-body framing also depends on camera position, available distance and the room. Compare the whole setup with the audition’s framing requirement, rather than treating a stand-height number as a guarantee.

Which kit is easiest to adjust while recording alone?

On documented controls, the RL45B is the most relevant starting point here: its magnetic controller can detach, and NEEWER also provides app and computer-control options. That is a workflow recommendation, not a measured performance ranking.
