Compare two outdoor patio roll-up shades, including exact widths, fabric versus bamboo, crank controls, mounting requirements and wind limitations.

The best roll-up shade for an outdoor patio depends on the opening, the mounting surface and how exposed it is. Our two picks are Coolaroo’s Signature fabric shade with bungees for a wider opening and its Natural Bamboo shade for a sheltered spot where texture matters most.

This shortlist compares documented materials, controls, dimensions and care requirements. The recommendations reflect those features; we have not tested these shades ourselves.

Compare the two patio shade picks

Pick Material and control Size to plan around Main trade-off
Coolaroo Signature, Mocha, 474775 Knitted HDPE; wand operated 96 × 72-inch fabric; 98.75-inch bracket span Bungee kit included; retract before strong winds
Coolaroo Natural Bamboo, Driftwood, 460778 Natural bamboo; wand operated 48 × 72 inches overall; 45.25-inch material width Sheltered locations; no bungee attachment point

Coolaroo Signature 474775: best for a wider fabric shade

Choose this nominal 8 × 6-foot Mocha shade if you want an adjustable fabric screen with supplied bungee tie-downs. Its knitted high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, material and crank control make it a practical starting point for a patio opening that can accommodate its brackets.

The useful advantage is the included bottom-rail restraint system. You also get a removable four-foot operating wand and no cassette around the top roller.

The sizing needs care: the fabric is 96 inches wide, while Coolaroo’s current manual requires a 98.75-inch bracket-to-bracket span for the eight-foot shade. Measure the installation space rather than assuming that an eight-foot opening is enough.

Coolaroo Natural Bamboo 460778: best for a sheltered, textured look

This four-by-six-foot Driftwood option suits a covered patio or porch where you prefer natural bamboo to fabric. Coolaroo lists 48 × 72 inches overall, with a narrower 45.25 × 72-inch shade surface and a removable four-foot wand.

Its appeal is the visible natural texture and filtered light. It is not a blackout shade, so choose it for partial screening rather than a promise of complete privacy.

Wind exposure is the compromise. The manufacturer says there is no suitable point for adding bungee hardware without risking damage. Use it in a protected location, lower it fully when in use and roll it up when winds increase.

What to check before ordering

Write down both the available bracket space and the area you want screened. The two models above illustrate why advertised width, fabric width and overall width should not be treated as interchangeable. Check where you will stand to reach and turn the wand before choosing the mounting height.

For the Signature fabric model, the current installation manual calls for at least 2¼ inches of wall/ceiling clearance and a 2⅛-inch flat vertical mounting surface. It specifies wood or metal studs, or concrete anchors, and advises against drywall anchors. Ceiling mounting requires bracket adjustment. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact shade and hardware.

Bungees do not remove the need to retract a shade: the Signature manual says to roll it up when unused or before strong winds. Pick a location where you can readily reach the controls and bring the shade up.

Choose a cordless operating system, particularly where young children live or visit. The CPSC warns that window-covering cords can strangle children; keep furniture and toys away from window coverings and cords. A cordless label does not replace correct installation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave a patio roller shade down all the time?

Follow the model’s weather instructions. Coolaroo tells Signature owners to retract it when unused or before strong winds; its bamboo guidance favors protected locations and retraction during severe weather.

Will an eight-foot shade fit an eight-foot opening?

Not necessarily. The Signature 474775 has eight-foot-wide fabric but needs a 98.75-inch bracket span. Compare the exact installation dimensions with the space available.

Can I add tie-downs to the bamboo shade?

Coolaroo advises against it for this bamboo model because the natural construction has no suitable attachment point. Choose the fabric model with its designed bungee system if that feature is essential.

Are these shades a substitute for a privacy wall?

The bamboo model is explicitly not blackout. Treat these picks as adjustable shade screens and assess the actual material and sightlines before relying on either for privacy.

How should I clean the shade?

For Signature fabric, use water and mild soap as needed and let it dry before retracting. For bamboo, Coolaroo recommends gentle vacuuming followed by a damp microfiber cloth. Check each model’s care guidance before using a cleaner.
