Choose a standalone drawing tablet computer by its apps, pen and complete setup. Compare the 13-inch iPad Air M4, 12-inch Surface Pro and Galaxy Tab S10 FE.

A tablet computer for drawing should let you open an art app, work directly on its screen and save the result without carrying a second computer. The first decision is which software you need. An iPad is a strong fit for Procreate, a Windows Surface can run desktop applications, and a Galaxy tablet offers Android drawing apps with an included S Pen.

Our shortlist covers those three routes. These are recommendations based on manufacturer specifications, pen documentation and published app requirements. We have not measured brush latency, drawing battery life or how many layers each device can handle.

Which drawing tablet computer should you choose?

  • For a roomy Procreate canvas: iPad Air 13-inch M4, with a separately purchased Apple Pencil Pro.
  • For desktop Windows art software: Surface Pro 12-inch, first edition, with a separately purchased Surface Slim Pen 2. Check Windows on Arm compatibility for your whole workflow.
  • For Android drawing with the pen included: Galaxy Tab S10 FE, 10.9-inch, with its supplied S Pen.

All three contain their own processor, storage, battery and operating system. A pen display or screenless graphics tablet usually needs a compatible host computer or device to run the drawing software. A shortcut keypad, game-console drawing accessory or generic touchscreen stylus is another category again.

1. iPad Air 13-inch M4: for a larger portable canvas

Configuration: US iPad Air 13-inch M4, 128GB, Wi-Fi, Space Gray, part MH5N4LL/A. The recommendation is for this generation and configuration; changing storage, connectivity or screen size changes the purchase.

The attraction is the combination of a larger drawing surface and iPad art apps. Apple specifies a fully laminated Liquid Retina display with 2732 × 2048 resolution, P3 wide color and 600-nit brightness. The marketed 13-inch screen measures 12.9 inches as a rectangle. At 616 grams for this Wi-Fi model, it is worth thinking about a supported drawing position rather than assuming you will hold it comfortably in one hand throughout a session.

Buy the right Pencil. This Air supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C. Pencil Pro adds pressure sensitivity, alongside tilt, hover, squeeze, barrel roll and double-tap capabilities; individual gestures depend on app support. It pairs and charges magnetically on the iPad. The USB-C Pencil supports tilt but lacks pressure sensitivity, so it is a less suitable choice when varying line weight by hand pressure matters. First- and second-generation Apple Pencils are not compatible with this M4 Air.

The tablet box includes a USB-C cable and 20W USB-C power adapter, but no Pencil. Budget for Pencil Pro and your drawing app separately. The 128GB storage choice is a starting configuration, not a promise that it will hold every large painting, animation or reference library. Estimate your project storage and backup needs before choosing capacity.

Choose it if Procreate or another iPad app is central to your work and the larger screen matters more than the smallest bag footprint. Pass if you require a particular Windows or Mac application or plug-in to run locally: an iPad version, where one exists, can have different features and licensing.

Check the iPad Air configuration at Apple; select 13-inch M4, 128GB, Wi-Fi and Space Gray. See Apple’s exact model specifications and Pencil feature comparison.

2. Surface Pro 12-inch: for a Windows drawing workflow

Configuration: Surface Pro 12-inch, first edition, Snapdragon X Plus eight-core processor, 16GB RAM, 256GB storage, Platinum, model EP2-33670. This is the 12-inch first-edition device, not a 13-inch Surface Pro or a product whose edition number happens to be 12.

This is the choice to investigate when you want the same Windows document workflow on a tablet that you use at a desk. Microsoft specifies a 12-inch LCD, 2196 × 1464 resolution, a 3:2 aspect ratio and a refresh rate up to 90Hz; the default is 60Hz. The tablet weighs 686 grams before accessories. Its built-in kickstand helps on a table, but your lap and preferred drawing angle still deserve consideration.

The recommended pen is Surface Slim Pen 2, also called Surface Slim Pen second edition. Microsoft lists 4,096 pressure points, tilt, rear magnetic storage and charging for this device. Tactile signals are supported in selected Windows 11 apps. The pen has a rechargeable battery: charge it before first use. Bluetooth pairing enables its shortcut button; it does not turn every app into a pressure-aware drawing program.

The standard tablet package includes a USB-C charging cable, but the pen, keyboard and wall power adapter are separate. Microsoft recommends a USB-C Power Delivery supply of at least 27W, or 45W for fast charging. If you want a detachable keyboard, choose one specified for the 12-inch first edition; the 13-inch Surface keyboards are not interchangeable.

Check Arm compatibility before committing. This model runs Windows 11 Home on an Arm processor. Windows can run many x86 and x64 apps through emulation, but peripherals still need a built-in driver or an Arm64 driver from their maker. Check your drawing app, required plug-ins, scanner and any external pen tablet individually.

There is useful specific evidence for Clip Studio Paint: its current Windows requirements list Arm CPUs running the x64 app and say Surface Pen can be used. They also warn that an external tablet with an unsupported Windows on Arm driver cannot be used. That supports considering this Surface for Clip Studio, without promising measured speed or compatibility with every desktop art tool.

Choose it when Windows application access is the deciding factor and you have checked that full setup. Add the required pen and charger to your comparison before judging value. See Microsoft’s device and accessory guidance and Clip Studio Paint’s system requirements.

3. Galaxy Tab S10 FE: for an included pressure-sensitive pen

Configuration: US Galaxy Tab S10 FE, 10.9-inch, Wi-Fi, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, Gray, SM-X520NZAAXAR. This is the FE model, not the larger FE+, a 5G variant or the AMOLED-equipped Tab S10+.

Samsung specifies a 10.9-inch LCD with 2304 × 1440 resolution and an adaptive refresh rate up to 90Hz. Its smaller size offers a different tradeoff from the 13-inch Air: less room for canvas and tool panels, but less screen to fit into your bag. Storage can be expanded with a compatible microSD card, bought separately; an app’s working files and installation may still use internal storage.

The supplied S Pen is pressure-sensitive and does not need charging. Samsung says this FE pen does not support Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth pairing or Air actions. That removes a pen-charging step from ordinary drawing, but it also means you should not expect the remote gestures of some other S Pens. The box illustration for the exact US model shows the tablet, S Pen, USB-C cable and ejector tool, with no wall charger.

This is an Android drawing setup. Procreate is an iPad app and does not run here. Clip Studio Paint offers a Galaxy version, but its tablet license is separate from a desktop perpetual license. Check your chosen Android app’s brush features, export options, required OS version and payment model before treating the included pen as a complete software bundle.

Choose the FE if you prefer Android and want a compatible drawing pen in the standard package. The reviewed retailer candidate used a different model-code suffix, so the link below goes to Samsung’s exact US configuration. Match the full SKU and included accessories when comparing another seller.

Make the software decision before buying hardware

Start with one real project: the app you need, its document format, your usual canvas dimensions, expected layers and export destination. A supported operating system is only the beginning. Memory requirements rise with larger images and more layers, and an app may omit desktop features on its tablet version.

For reference, Procreate currently requires iPadOS 16.3 or later. Clip Studio Paint’s current iPad requirements list iPadOS 18 or 26, at least 3GB memory and 6GB free storage. Its Galaxy version requires Android 13 or later on ARM64, at least 4GB memory, recommends 6GB, and needs 6GB free storage. Check the installed OS and current app listing on the device you buy.

For Windows, Clip Studio Paint lists 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, OpenGL 3.3 support, at least 2GB RAM with 8GB recommended, and 3GB free storage. These are published requirements, not a benchmark for complex artwork. Its one-time purchase and Update Pass apply to Windows and macOS; iPad and Galaxy tablet use requires an annual or monthly plan. A smartphone-only plan is not a tablet license. See the Procreate FAQ and Clip Studio platform and license guidance.

Compare the complete drawing kit

Add up the exact tablet, compatible pen, required charger, case or stand and software license. The FE includes its drawing pen; the Air and Surface configurations here do not. A keyboard can help with typing and shortcuts, but it is optional for direct pen drawing. Avoid assuming a listing photograph establishes what comes in the box.

Use return terms to plan a practical fit check after purchase: your comfortable drawing angle, palm rejection in your app, pressure response with your preferred brushes and exporting a typical file. Save an editable copy and test your backup route. None of those personal workflow checks can be settled by a pressure-level count alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can these tablet computers draw without a laptop?

Yes. The iPad Air, Surface Pro and Galaxy Tab S10 FE run drawing apps on their own operating systems. You still need a compatible pen and app. A computer-dependent pen display or screenless tablet is a different purchase.

Which option should I choose for Procreate?

Choose the iPad Air if Procreate is essential. Procreate runs on compatible iPads, not Windows Surface or Android Galaxy tablets. For this M4 Air, Apple Pencil Pro is the pressure-sensitive Pencil choice and is sold separately.

Does every recommended tablet include a drawing pen?

No. The Galaxy Tab S10 FE includes its compatible S Pen. The iPad Air configuration requires a separate Apple Pencil, and the Surface Pro configuration requires a separate Surface Slim Pen. Check the exact package rather than assuming an accessory shown in a photo is included.

Will all my Windows art software work on this Surface?

Do not assume that. The 12-inch first-edition Surface Pro uses Windows on Arm. Many apps can run natively or through emulation, and Clip Studio Paint specifically documents Arm and Surface Pen support. Check required plug-ins and peripheral drivers separately; hardware drivers must support the platform.

Is 128GB enough storage for drawing?

It depends on your project sizes, references, animation files and backup habits. Leave room for the operating system, apps and working files. Compare larger capacities if your library is substantial; the Galaxy’s microSD expansion does not guarantee that every app can move its working data off internal storage.
