For a desktop Illustrator setup, our starting recommendation is the Wacom Intuos Pro Medium (PTK670). Choose the Intuos Small (CTL-4100) for a compact wired setup, the Cintiq 16 (DTK168) to draw directly on a larger display, or the Movink 13 (DTH135K0) when a light pen display matters most. These are four different ways to work with a separate computer.
All four require a compatible host computer for desktop Illustrator. Intuos models are screenless input tablets: you draw on the tablet while looking at your computer’s display. Cintiq 16 and Movink 13 are pen displays: they show the host computer’s image and accept pen input. Neither pen display is a standalone Illustrator computer.
Which Wacom fits your Illustrator work?
Intuos Pro Medium PTK670: our pick for frequent desktop use when you want a larger drawing area, programmable keys and dials while keeping your existing monitor. It includes Pro Pen 3 and supports USB or Bluetooth.
Intuos Small CTL-4100: a simpler wired option with four ExpressKeys and an included Pen 4K. Its small active area suits a compact desk; this exact model has no Bluetooth.
Cintiq 16 DTK168: a 16-inch, 2560 × 1600 pen display with Pro Pen 3. Choose it for direct drawing at a desk, with the space and video connections it requires.
Movink 13 DTH135K0: a 13.3-inch Full HD OLED pen display weighing 420g. It is the portable-display choice here, but it still needs a host computer and a suitable video connection.
1. Wacom Intuos Pro Medium PTK670: for frequent Illustrator work
The Intuos Pro Medium PTK670 has a 263 × 148mm active area. It provides ten customizable ExpressKeys and two customizable mechanical dials. The included Pro Pen 3 is battery-free and supports 8,192 pressure levels.
Why choose it: It gives you more drawing surface than the Intuos Small while leaving your monitor at a comfortable viewing height. Assign the keys and dials to the Illustrator actions you use most. That is our workflow-based recommendation, not a measured speed claim.
Main limitation: There is no screen or multi-touch input. You will need to get used to drawing in one place while watching another. Match the PTK670 model code rather than assuming every Intuos Pro Medium or Paper Edition listing is this device.
The standard package lists the tablet, Pro Pen 3, pen stand with ten replacement nibs, pen-customization parts and a 1.8m USB-C-to-A cable. A computer with only USB-C ports may need the appropriate adapter or alternative data cable. Bluetooth needs a compatible host; install the Wacom driver for the full feature set.
2. Wacom Intuos Small CTL-4100: the compact wired choice
The Intuos Small CTL-4100 is the black, non-Bluetooth model. Its active area is 152 × 95mm. The battery-free Pen 4K offers 4,096 pressure levels, and the tablet has four configurable ExpressKeys.
Why choose it: It is a practical way to add pen input when desk space is limited and you already have a suitable computer and monitor. Prefer the Pro Medium if you want a larger active area or additional shortcut controls. The pressure-level number alone is not a reason to expect better Illustrator artwork.
Main limitation: It is wired and has no multi-touch. The standard box includes Pen 4K, three spare standard nibs and a USB-A-to-Micro-B cable. A USB-C-only computer needs an appropriate adapter. This selection is the standard new tablet, not a renewed unit, a pen-nib multipack or a Bluetooth CTL-4100WL bundle.
3. Wacom Cintiq 16 DTK168: direct drawing on a larger display
The Cintiq 16 DTK168 has a 16.0-inch IPS display with 2560 × 1600 resolution and a 345 × 215mm active area. Pro Pen 3 is included. This model has no multi-touch; its built-in folding legs provide a 20-degree position.
Why choose it: The larger drawing surface is useful if you prefer working directly on the image and have a permanent desk setup. Its 2.0kg body is substantially heavier than the 420g Movink 13, so we would favor Movink for frequent travel.
Connection check: A single USB-C connection requires a host that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery. Otherwise, check the supported HDMI-plus-USB route and power arrangement. HDMI-to-mini-HDMI and USB-C-to-A cables are separate purchases; a USB-C socket alone does not establish video capability.
The standard DTK168 package includes Pro Pen 3, a pen stand, USB-C video and power cables, an AC adapter and plug head. A separately adjustable display stand is optional. Match the DTK168 model code and package details when comparing listings titled Cintiq 16.
4. Wacom Movink 13 DTH135K0: for a mobile pen-display setup
The Movink 13 is a 13.3-inch OLED pen display with 1920 × 1080 resolution and multi-touch. The display weighs 420g. It is supplied with Pro Pen 3 and a 1m USB-C-to-C cable.
Why choose it: It is easier to fit into a portable computer setup than the Cintiq 16 on the listed dimensions and weight. The tradeoff is a smaller, lower-resolution display. Plan your Illustrator panel layout around that space; portability does not remove the need to carry a computer.
Main limitation: The host needs USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode or a compatible Thunderbolt connection. The standard package has no built-in stand, and Wacom lists the foldable stand and power adapter as optional accessories. Check the complete connection and power setup before buying. Movink 13 is a pen display, distinct from products named MovinkPad.
Check Illustrator and the Wacom driver separately
Start with Adobe’s requirements for the Illustrator version you intend to run. Its version 30.0-and-later table lists Windows 11 23H2 and 24H2, specified Windows 10 releases, and macOS 13, 14, 15 and 26. It lists 8GB RAM as the minimum and recommends 16GB. A tablet cannot make an unsupported computer compatible.
Then check Wacom’s driver page for your exact model and operating system. The captured 6.4.15-1 release notes list all four model families here; the Windows driver covers Windows 10/11 x64 and Windows 11 ARM64, while the Mac driver covers macOS 13–15, 26 and 27. Driver support alone does not establish that your Illustrator version supports the same OS or processor.
Avoid using an old box’s minimum Windows or macOS version as the final compatibility check. Older hardware product pages can retain earlier requirements while the current driver and Illustrator have moved on. Check the intersection of the current application, driver, model and connection requirements before buying a used device.
Make pressure work in the brush you use
Pressure-sensitive hardware does not automatically make every brush vary its width. Wacom’s Illustrator guidance explains that a calligraphic brush must have Size set to Pressure and a variation range configured. Test the particular brush after installing the driver.
On a Mac, the Wacom driver and Illustrator may also need the permissions described in Wacom’s setup guidance. Follow the instructions that match your macOS version. If pressure fails, check driver recognition, the application’s permission settings and the brush settings before assuming you need a more expensive tablet.
Frequently asked questions
Do these Wacom tablets run Illustrator by themselves?
No. The two Intuos choices are screenless input tablets, and Cintiq 16 and Movink 13 are displays with pen input. Desktop Illustrator runs on the connected compatible Windows PC or Mac.
What if I want Illustrator on an iPad?
Illustrator on iPad is a separate tablet app with its own Adobe requirements. Adobe recommends Apple Pencil and says a Pencil-compatible iPad can qualify even if it is absent from the example model list. Check the live app requirements and the Pencil model supported by that iPad. These four Wacom recommendations are for a desktop-computer workflow.
Does buying a Wacom include an Illustrator subscription?
Do not assume it does. These recommendations cover the hardware packages described above. Adobe requires software activation and subscription validation; confirm your Illustrator entitlement separately, and read the terms of any retailer software promotion before treating it as part of the purchase.
Which is the best starting point?
Choose Intuos Small for a compact wired setup, or Intuos Pro Medium for more drawing area and controls. Choose Cintiq 16 if direct drawing and desk space matter most, or Movink 13 if carrying a lighter display is the priority. Confirm computer compatibility and every necessary cable before choosing between them.
