Windows 8 Tablet Apps: 3 Useful Desktop Choices

VLC, Firefox 115 ESR and 7-Zip still have official Windows download routes. Check your tablet’s Windows edition, processor type and input needs first.

Useful Windows 8 tablet apps still exist, but the first question is which version of Windows your tablet runs. For an Intel or AMD tablet with desktop Windows, VLC is a sensible local media player, Firefox 115 ESR is the relevant legacy browser line, and 7-Zip is a practical archive utility. These are desktop programs with official publisher download routes. They are not a revived list of Windows Store touch apps.

Windows 8 support ended in January 2016, and Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023. An application update does not fix the unsupported operating system underneath it. A supported device is the better choice for sensitive accounts and everyday online work; an older tablet may still be useful for a narrowly chosen task such as playing local media.

Choose an app for the job

App Useful for Compatibility limit
VLC desktop Playing local video and audio files Publisher lists Windows XP SP3 through Windows 11; choose the appropriate Windows installer
Firefox 115 ESR A browser when a legacy Windows installation must still be used The 115 ESR line covers Windows 7, 8 and 8.1; the ordinary current Firefox installer is a different choice
7-Zip Opening and creating file archives Publisher lists Windows 8; it does not separately name Windows 8.1

Check Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows RT separately

Look at the tablet’s system information before downloading anything. Record the Windows edition and whether the installed system is 32-bit or 64-bit. For ordinary desktop Windows on Intel or AMD hardware, match the publisher’s x86 or x64 installer to that system. The presence of an ARM download on a modern software page does not mean that it works on Windows RT.

A Surface RT or another Windows RT tablet has a different application model. Microsoft’s Surface RT guide restricts additional app installation to the Windows Store. The desktop installers in this article are therefore not recommendations for Windows RT. Do not buy an old RT tablet assuming that a Windows download link will make it behave like an Intel Windows PC.

1. VLC: a useful choice for local video and music

VLC is a free, open-source multimedia player. VideoLAN’s official Windows download page offers Windows installers and explicitly includes older desktop Windows versions in its compatibility range. That makes it a focused starting point when the tablet’s main job is playing files you already have. Choose the desktop Windows build, rather than assuming an old Store edition is interchangeable.

The benefit is straightforward: one application for a range of media formats. The tradeoff is that this is a desktop interface on a small screen. Check whether the menus and playback controls are comfortable at your display scaling, and keep a keyboard or mouse available if touch selection is awkward. File format support also does not guarantee that a particular damaged file, protected service or demanding video will play well on aging hardware.

2. Firefox 115 ESR: the specific legacy browser branch

For Windows 8 and 8.1, the relevant Firefox branch is 115 ESR. Mozilla’s 115.43.0 release notes identify Windows 7–8.1 as supported systems for that legacy branch. The release page includes links specifically labeled for ESR 115, separate from newer ESR and ordinary Firefox downloads.

Use Mozilla’s own 32-bit ESR 115 download or 64-bit ESR 115 download, matching your installed Windows system. The “115” in those download choices matters. A general “latest Firefox” button may lead to a branch intended for a newer operating system.

Treat this as a limited compatibility option. A browser receiving fixes does not make Windows 8 or 8.1 a supported system, and it does not guarantee that every website or extension will continue working. Check Mozilla’s current legacy-support guidance before relying on it; there is no promised future support deadline in this recommendation.

3. 7-Zip: a small utility for compressed files

7-Zip’s official site provides the archive utility and x86 and x64 Windows downloads. It can be useful when you need to unpack downloaded project files or create an archive of local documents. Its published system list names Windows 8, although it does not separately name Windows 8.1. Check the current installer notes for your exact system instead of treating every old Windows release as identical.

Archive management usually involves selecting files and folders, so a mouse and keyboard may be easier than touch alone. The modern ARM64 download is not a Windows RT workaround. Obtain the installer through the project’s own site and follow its official download link, rather than a third-party “driver updater” or software bundle.

Before installing on an older tablet

  • Save important files first. Older hardware and software deserve a backup before you change the setup.
  • Match the application to the task. Local media playback, browsing and archive management have different requirements.
  • Use the publisher’s installer. Match the Windows edition and architecture; a familiar app name alone is insufficient.
  • Check input comfort. These are desktop applications. Touch availability does not establish finger-friendly menus or a dedicated tablet interface.
  • Keep the scope realistic. If you need a current app ecosystem or dependable compatibility with an online service, use a supported platform.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still download apps for a Windows 8 tablet?

Some desktop applications still have official downloads for older Windows systems. VLC, Firefox 115 ESR and 7-Zip are useful examples with the compatibility qualifications above. Windows RT uses a different app model, and an old app name does not guarantee a functioning Store download.

Do these apps work on a Surface RT?

The desktop installers listed here are not Windows RT recommendations. Surface RT is restricted to its supported app model; a modern Windows ARM64 installer is not interchangeable with a Windows RT app.

Which Firefox version should I choose for Windows 8.1?

Choose the Firefox 115 ESR branch from Mozilla’s official download links, with the 32-bit or 64-bit installer that matches your installed system. Do not assume the ordinary latest Firefox or a newer ESR branch supports Windows 8.1.

Are these apps designed for touchscreens?

They are desktop applications. You may be able to operate controls by touch, but this guide does not claim that their interfaces are optimized for a small touchscreen. A keyboard or mouse can help with menus, file selection and setup.

Does installing an updated browser make Windows 8.1 secure?

No. Browser updates do not restore operating-system security support. Microsoft ended Windows 8.1 support on January 10, 2023. Use a supported platform for sensitive accounts and routine online work.
